Me and my hubby got tickets but gave them to my dad and his friend thinking we would get another chance (some hope!) The girl next door to us was getting married that day, much to the disbelief of her intended ââ¬â who was a season ticket holder. The whole street was decked in red and white and my six month old daughter looked fab in her ââ¬Ëcoloursââ¬â¢ (she did get a photo taken later with the cup though).
Didn't go to Notts County, was at the home match v Reading when Dick Malone twatted the crossbar just before half time and the bar was still vibrating at half time (childrens enclosure, roker end). Next round Man City home - passed over the heads to the front - again the Roker end. Next round Luton in the Clock stand. Semi v Arsenal at Wembley with the schoo,l and screamin when they put the score (2-1) on the scoreboard! Final at home. Didn't dare move after we'd scored in case i broke the spell - empty coke can in my sweaty mit foran hour! More details I could give - my dad meeting Horswill Tueart Kerr and Watson beforew tje semi; The new tv breaking down on the morning of May 5th.... I'll leave them for another time. x
I was in some part of the ether, I don't know where people are before they exist, but I was there! But my grandad and his brothers were at the match.
Followed the lads through all the stages, extatic at the mauling of Man City viewed from the clock stand. Coach trip to Sheffield (Hillsborough) ended up sitting on the terraces for the last 10 minutes with my head in my hands, could'nt bare to watch, spent that night in a Yorkshire club with a room full of converted Sunderland fans telling us to enjoy as this is as good as it will get for you!! Like a lot of fellow supporters could not get a ticket for the final and spent the day in Silksworth Comerades Club watching in the bar. Plenty of beer on the table as the bar closed at 3.00 then. 31 minutes into the game Porterfield scores, the table goes over floor awash with beer but did we care, noooo. Simpathetic steward opened the bar at half time, replenished supplies drunk our way to extacy. That night was fantastic in town and down the coast. I was a student at the Polytech and on the day the lads were to return there was a tanoy announcement does anyone want to decorate the bus bringing the lads home? Lessons or bus! no contest Spent the full afternoon in the bus station doing a labour of love, then spent the evening cheering the returning gladiators. A memory I will never forget. One final memory was the New years eve party at a friends house when one of the revelers was Ian Porterfield and he would not pay for the beer I spilled!! Respect for Ian and I expect he is playing on that Wembly pitch in the sky. Thats why I call myself 'Spirit of 73' good time are on the way back lads, keep the faith.
I was in my first year in senior school in 1973, I remember I was shopping in Presto (another blast from the past) in Gateshead when it came over the tannoy Sunderland had won Arsenal to get to the final. I believe the score was 2-1. A cheer went up around the store. The Friday before cup final day our local parish priest held a mass for Sunderland so the whole school had to attend. BBC and ITV used to cover cup finals, we used to alternate between the two channels to listen to the different commentators. I remember quite a lot about the game, "That Goal", "That double save" by Montgomery. Do you remember Mick Jones got injured, a dislocated shouler I believe, he still stayed for his runner up medal. He must have been in agony!
Hello there ltf. I think you'll find Jones got his injury the year before when Leeds beat Arsenal. He did it whilst making the only goal.
