To be fair we've got to accept that most signings taking up big wages and being 'deadwood' in our current squad are ones who were bought when two managers were working under financial constraints. The likes of Degen, El Zhar, Konchesky, Poulsen, et al were bought when we literally didn't have a pot to piss in.

if Suarez is rested or God forbid injured could we not play aquaman in the hole behind Carroll with Downing and Kuyt(?) wide
In fact if any of our two strikers is injured we have no real backup,so go one up front and plenty of attacking midlielders getting up in support

I was talking about a 4-4-2, though it won't just be Gerrard out at times. There'll be times when simple availability contributes to selection. Then we'll look at the bench and think, "It's better." But I agree that Aqua suits a 4-2-3-1 better.

Spearing's tenacity will be an asset, too, in the right game. You'd want him in a derby. But against the likes of Arsenal away, where we don't need as much muscle and we're playing counter attack, Aqua can play the killer pass from Reina to a forward that Gerrard, Alonso or Adam could.

Of Spearing, Meireles and Aqua I'd let Meireles go first.

I said the same just this week. Reminds me of Hammann. He's hard in a tackle and comfortable bringing the ball out. It depends on his tactical awareness.

Ya MFG, and would he stay healthy enough? one run forward and he might lose a hammy/groin/ankle/ etc. Also forgot about that shot he does possess. ( See goal against West ham).

Here`s another option to consider guys...if Aqua leaves, as is seeming more and more likely then we all know another striker is a possibility to arrive at Anfield this year so why not have Luis in the hole behind a front two or three...cast your minds back to the manure game at Anfield last season and the devastating effect he had when picking the ball up deep in the central areas and running at the mank defenders (i'm sure even those in the back row of every stand could see the brown stains in the mank defenders shorts by the end of the game)....just a thought!!!!

I wouldn't mind a midfield 3 of Lucas, Adam and Aqualani now that Gerrard is going to be out for the start of the season with Downing & Suarez supporting Carrol up front. Then we still have Kuyt who I'm finding quite difficult to leave out but not sure who he would come in for unless we played a standard 442 with him out on the right wing & Downing on the left.

I haven't even mentioned Raul or Henderson yet either! Plenty of good selection headaches for Kenny by the looks of things, assuming none of them leave. For the first time in quite a while we should have a bench that may be able to change the game.
