Yeah when it was on Anlaby Road, shortly before it closed down. I'm too young to remember it ever being on Prinny Ave or Cott Centre!
Loved the Searchers...esp. Needles and Pins in the early 60s. Always headed to Sydney Scarboroughs when I took the bus in from Beverley as a teenager in the early 50s...magical place....Frankie Laine, Tony Bennett, Tommy Steele..memories!!
I had a shop on Prinny Ave - Bogus - early to late 70s. We sold second-hand vinyl, new and second-hand books, comics, and even clothes for a while...
If you're living in Huddersfield (from what I can remember) then a short trip to Leeds to visit Crash, Jumbo and Normans is well worth it. Crash in particular has a great selection at competitive prices.
I probably should, I had planned to go have a look ages ago but never got round to it. The one shop in Huddersfield (Vinyl Tap) isn't very good.
Marion Ryan, Lita Roza, Al Martino, Jo Stafford, Kay Starr, Montavani, David Whitfield, Eddie Calvert, Johnnie Ray, Ruby Murray etc.
I would recommend it but by the time you've payed for a train it's cheaper and easier just to order online, well worth it if you're ever in Leeds though. Norman's have a very good online shop with a lot of limited editions and signed copies which is well worth checking out.
No that's another one, it's an online based one on the outskirts of Leeds but you can go and browse the warehouse if you want to. Well worth a visit if you're ever in this neck of the woods.
Was it at the end opposite the church ? I used to have a flat on Park Ave in 74 and bought a lot of vinyl on Prinny Ave. Remember a shop called Pantomine which was in the building now occupied by the Tex Mex ( now a Chinese) restaurant.
I have still got some of the ex juke box singles that I got from a stall on the market. They had no middles so you had to buy the middles seperately.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Boots in Prospect Centre yet. Used to be my first port of call after getting off the Hedon bus outside the library. Up the stairs to the records and home brew dept. After that Sydney Scarborough's etc
Scarborough's - it is sad that the digital download era has killed the independent record shops. I used to love having a browse and having a physical album. It doesn't quite feel the same now when you get an e mail confirming you've downloaded a certain album. Maybe the rennaissance of vinyl will see new openings for independent record shops.
A recording by her and Liberace -"Indiscretion"- was my mum's favourite. Bought it for her from Sydney Scarborough in the early 50's as a birthday present. As a pianist himself my dad loved Liberace and he played his club gigs in Hull resplendent in a white tuxedo and red/pink carnation!
