Lambden, my other half is a Reading fan and in the car on the way to the game he said he expected they'd thrash us 3-0. The journey home was a good one!!!!
Love watching the Steve Moran video on youtube! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsnctWcOuhA Shame im just to young to not have been there! Other than that, Brighton - Fonte's Goal, best fan celebration i've ever seen Kevin Phillips goal in the Uefa cup also comes to mind.
THAT Wimbledon game lives long in the memory. It was the Beattie and Pahars double act and the recent away game at Orient reminded me of the Wimbledon game with Lambert and Barney being our modern day version! The most memorable was Danny Wallace scoring at the Dell with a bicycle kick to help Saints beat Liverpool 2-1!
Mine would be: - Beating Walsall 3-1 and promotion on my Birthday - Finding out about the take over on a trip, Saints supporting teacher going mental - First South Coast Derby - 13th Feb 2010 - Guly's goal against Blackpool in the cup this season - The guy behind he who said "There goes another... looks like the playoffs for us this season" when MK Dons scored their second
This was my first game at Southampton but we couldn't get tickets for the home end so had to sit with the Manure fans Had to be especially quiet when Wes Brown scored an own goal!!!
Not my most proud or memorable but that Beattie goal vs Chelsea 15 seconds into the match always sticks in my memory. Went on to lose 2-1 I think, but thats not important!
Guys and gals to an old codger like me there have been so many highs that it would be hard to pick any one out of the 1000's that have happened over the years. I guess for me it would have to be when we won the FA cup!!! I guess the win really put Saints on the football map. I have to say over all those years from the old div 3 south up through the leagues to div1 later to be called the Premier division. There were so many highs during all those years, a few lows of course especially of about three years or so ago. The younger element of you, have at least the chance to experience something of what I have experienced over all those years starting of course with our recent promotion. The win against the odds against MK dons, Plymouth, Brighton or Brentford. they are all perhaps ingrained in your memories. Trust me, that is just one small, but not insignificant, part of the pleasure to come. Always assuming we do not ever have another owner, the likes of Lowe and co. I don't need to tell you Saints are a wonderful family club. I am pleased and proud to at least be a minute part of the club and it's history over the years.
im surprised no one mentioned Derby away in the playoffs. When rasiak scored that goal ive never seen anything like it,5000 Southampton fans in yellow going mental. Then there was making the long trip up to Preston to win 3-2 from 2-0 down. Adam lallana's goal against westbrom when they were top of the league and we we're second from bottom. Cant forget last game at the dell either, never been to a game like that before in my life.
Derby away in play offs?? I try to erase that memory! For me, winning cup in 76, beating Leeds in the semi of the 79 league cup, but my favourite two are: 1. Beating Ipswich 4-3 at home from 3-1 down in early 80's when shilts was injured and Peter Wells played his first game for ages, and 2. Beating Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 at the dell in fa cup quarter final replay in 1984, I still can see Steve Williams' strike now!
Great post from Beddytare Of my 23 years as a Southampton supporter there are so many happy memories and it's ridiculous and seemingly irrational how the fortunes of a football team produce emotions almost as strong as you experience with your actual family. But to answer the question in terms of pride. The Fans - Dellhurst park was a highlight and the likes will probabley never be repeated, but for me it was when Arsenal lifted the FA cup in 2003 and all you could hear was the chant of "yellows". The game was awful and Saints didn't play brilliantly, but whilst every other clubs fans would have left the stadium quicker than a heartbeat. The vast majority of us saints fans stayed and sang our hearts out to acknowledge the club in reaching the domestic showcase. It's easy to sing when you're winning, but I was most proud to be a Saints fan then. Players - Loads of great players have represented the club, but nothing gives you more pride than a player who starts his career here and even further still plays his whole career here and even further again happens to be one of the greatest players of all time. Matthew Le Tissier is all those things. Matches - Beating Liverpool, Arsenal, Man U & Portsmouth are always great occassions. The liverpool 4-1 & Man U 6-3 have already been mentioned, but I loved it when we beat Tottenham 4-0 in the 3rd round of the FA Cup in 2003. Live on BBC 1 we tore them apart that game. It was one of the most one sided matches i have witnessed. Goals - So So many to pick from...they can be just great goals or important or a last minute winner/equaliser. There are at least a handful every season and too many to remember
