What's wrong with 442

442 seems to be a formation of the past these days, with all these different formations being used, such as 3 at the back , or false no 9's.
I certainly in favour of a team experimenting with formations ,but I guess it depends on the players that you have and the coaches and ultimately the manager.
NW has been in the game long enough to understand these formations better than most , so why is that he doesnt tinker much during the game? DJ was the same very set in his ways, no plan B.
I would love to see our strongest 4 4 2 out there against Sheffield Wednesday a week Friday. Maybe a diamond with Ralls or Patterson sitting behind Tomlin Hoilett left NML right and would defo play Glatz with Ward. Neil if your reading this post , what you got to lose plenty of goals in those 6 players! Up the city

Patterson is not a CM. Tomlin in a midfield 2 is asking for trouble.

We need 3 in the middle.

If we did attempt it the wed have to go Ralls/Pack as they are our best 2 by a distance.

Id be working on possession all week in training. At home in particular id be getting the full backs to support the attack more.

Id also be axing Glatzel. Ward up top. Bogle on the bench.

Pack an Ralls as 2 of the 3 with Bacuna and Tomlin fighting it for the other place.

Our CM was a big weakness under Jones.

Like a few of your points Hilts , what exactly is Patterson then ? Bought as a defender , played in the PL as a striker , he wins alot of challenges in the air and personally think hed be more suited to protecting the back 4. Although point taken about Pack this may suit him better.
Tomlin at the point of a diamond in a four I think allows him to run and feed the strikers with his passing ability and get a few shots off . Defensively not the quickest agreed.
Again agreed Bennett and Peltier do not get up the touchline enough to support an attack and there crossing has been awful on occasions.
Bobby Glatz needs help not dropping, as mentioned in other posts he is not a lone striker.
Bacuna has played better in recent weeks, however he wouldn't be ahead of Tomlin in a formation not a chance.

He has his moments but its not enough and there is no way he can play in a 2.

Should have gone all out for Drinkwater whilst we were in the prem , defo a loan deal for the season, much better than the last time he came to us. Probably didn't want to come down to the championship being a PL winner. Bad move him going to Chelsea.

Agree with both points.

Especially the latter. We all said it pre season and it’s now blindingly obvious to see.

Tomlin was just not a Warnock type of player to sign.

Other reasons were the failure to (1) replace Manga with like for like not an average defender like Flint (2) have at least one decent wing back.
