Maybe. I think Fryatt is sufficient for most games, but for the really big matches when we have to win (say we're playing Leeds at Wembley), when it's really tight and both teams get one big chance; will Fryatt score his? McCormack will.

That's my point, I expect a striker to score more than he misses; now the team are providing him with class assists and service I owuld hope to see a better return than we are getting. Gulacsi has been greatly improved in the similar period and it he and the woodwork that has given us the edge - it dissipates all too easily ate the other end. One thing is a fact; Barmby will have a critical view, iff not too vocal at this time.

Are you aware of what profligate means?

Matty Fryatt ain't perfect, but he's the best striker we've got.

He has a good record of goal scoring (check his stats, he averages a goal every 3 games) he's still pretty young so will likely improve as well.

I would consider him to be a player we keep, and only ever sell if we are promoted to the PL and can get better in.

City Independant say that Billy Sharp will sign for us in January for £3 million. If this happens, I still don't see that Fryatt will leave us, as with Simpson washed up now and Adebola just a cameo, we still need an additional forward to go with AM and MF.

I think a striker should be judged by his goals, and Fryatt generally delivers.

Here's the players shooting statistics for the Championship this season. Let me know how many players have a better than 50% return to meet your expectation.

McLean by the way has had 36 shots, which is less than Brady who's had 40.

Sure, do you have a point or are you just wasting words in a debauched manner? :emoticon-0118-yawn:

Debate aside, I agree with your logic - I just think he is capable of producing more goals in this purple period.

I agree that we certainly don't need rid of Matty, and that we do need another striker. But I have never agreed with the notion that a striker should just be judged on goals. There is so much more to the job than just how many goals they score. McLean will have a better conversion rate than Fryatt, but Fryatt has scored more because he's had loads more chances, McLean (even when he was playing up front) hardly goes near the 6-yard box but the work he does outside the box is sorely missed when he is suspended.

Fryatt will always score goals, but at the same time he will probably always be a bad finisher, and we could do with better. If you look at the starting XI right now, he is probably the weak link (if there is one).

Fryatt is a bit of an outlier in that list because his shots are almost all from short range and just trickle to the keeper, whereas the likes of Brady's are all from miles out but are venomous shots. Brady's will look worse statistically but are a lot better shots technically and are more dangerous.

So if you were talking about a striker missing chances, and somebody said he was most profligate in a couple of games, would you say they were having a laugh saying that because the striker missed chances in those games?

Oh dear, the Stats Man doth arrive; what took you so long?

36 shots on target and 8 goals - it does not offer any sort of view worth a cat's cock hair. The point is that we see him being given good opportunities fromn some of the best link-up play we have seen for years and his return does not reflect that quality. One on ones (and not just one against Millwall) he lacks the aggression to burst the bag - he had it in once and alot of pundits thought their doubts about him were unfounded - is he slipping back to mediocrity when those around him are rising from it.

To be fair, yesterday I thought there was a change in passing style. Passes were being struck between players at a fair old rate, McClean had a couple of heavy first touches, but he wasn't alone. I just wonder if that was an instruction to up the tempo, I couldn't work out why the passes were being hit so hard?

I guess it's on topic as it's about creativity. Did you know Tolkien got the inspiration for Lord of the Rings when he was recuperating in Hull and he and his wife visited Roos? She danced in the woods, which he drew on for some of the characters. I don't know if she should be flattered or not.

    Anyway, as you were.

I was watching Julia Bradbury prancing around in Iceland on the telly and she said Tolkein got his inspiration from Iceland for Mordor, so Roos would be where the elves live :emoticon-0126-nerd:

I'm a bit lost by the posts on this thread, I see Fryatt so far ahead of Mclean that I can't believe we're having this debate.

No slight on Mclean, he's worked really hard and put in some decent performances, but he's nowhere near the quality of Fryatt.

People take it where they take it, but the thread is about Fryatt and not comparisons - like I said earlier, two different players two different styles - others have said much the same thing.

Fryatt has quality and he has loads of potential, but when I buy somethying, i will only pay so much for potential - strikers, goals, regular.

Lately he has been a little profligate!! <doh>
