Well that thought has cheered me right up this Sunday evening, I don't know if I can even face getting up for work tomorrow now...
Marcus and Nicola have long gone, we haven't had CL ambitions really since then, but we are still one of the better performing clubs of our size in the country. In a way i'm glad that we haven't turned into one of those nouveau riche clubs like Chelsea and Citeh, I quite like our long time identity as plucky underdogs.
Which is his point. YEs we want Southampton to be in the Prem but for someone who is not a Saints fan (or a neutral) 10-12 teams in the Prem may as well be anybody as they have no real identity of their own anymore. They are just 10-12 clones that look very short term. I still don't see the problem with the article.
I still haven't read it!... Well we are the only PL club that have their base in, and represent my city and I will be forever devoted to them, if a neutral doesn't respect us that is their problem. We have an identity for producing our own talent although that has been the most disappointing aspect for me in recent years, the small numbers that have broken through to become first team regulars considering the amount spent on the facilities at Staplewood, time for some new youth coaches maybe?
It's gets us pillaged every year by liverpool and ManU. If they can't beat you on the field they beat you with their cheque books. If we get too big the foxes get into the hen house.
I asked a deeply philosophical question regarding the shallowness, inequity and worthlessness of the time in which we live and you dismiss it flippantly.
Oh great you’ve introduced existential angst to not606 during an international break! We could lose a few here if we’re not careful. Has anyone got the number for the Samaritans?
But if we get too big it usually leads to an enjoyable season where we finish pretty high up the league. I would much rather have players who are wanted by the bigger clubs than not. I am fine with top players using us as a shop window to get a big move to another club, means we get to see top players playing for us even if only for a season or two.
Its a shallow puff peice, it's mentions nothing of the Lander takeover. Surely any journalist writing about our club's ambition or perceived lack-thereof, should be looking at the Ings transfer and its method of payment, and asking questions.
More likely to do with the player needing to prove his (longer term) fitness before his full transfer value is/was met by Saints. Maybe too, Ings gets a 'new improved contract' when he signs as a (contracted) Saints player rather than (just?) being a loanee.
It worked for a couple of seasons, but in the long term selling all your best players every summer can only lead to one thing. And it isn't glory.
