I've seen that picture many times before but couldn't put you an exact year on it. I would guess early to mid 70's. It looks like the old Gordon Road Stand when the dug outs were that (opposite) side. That's the limit of my knowledge I'm afraid but will try and research and find out.

Could be the same decade that one Maestro and its the GRS again. A few give away's in that picture, the dug outs are still that side but more importantly the cover to the corner of the Rainham End...the age can be determined from that if anyone knows when it was erected.

I'll find you a couple of really old pictures in a minute....

This is one of the oldest i've got and it is on my twitter profile, probably copyright but I don't know who it belongs too, to credit them.

If you look at the tip right hand corner it is uncovered, plus no change in the away end to this day (bottom of pic)...still a mess but scaffolding in place...LOL

That looks like Danny Westwood in the first picture, sitting on the bench. And it's before the seats were put in front of the old main stand. So I'm guessing it's 1975-6.

Good morning chaps. As far as the first photo is concerned, dear old Mr Westwood would appear to be wearing a trackie top from the Bukta range and as far as I recall they supplied our kit for the wonderful 78/79 season and the following one.

Has the town end always been the away end? There is a good away support in this pic if that is the case, cant see any segregation, maybe there wasnt any back then??

All through the 70's and 80's the Town End was indeed used for both home and away fans with little or no segregation. Sometimes a line of police separating the away fans if it was a large or volatile following.

Typically the away fans would be in the corner next to the Main Stand. IIRC They did finally fence that corner area off from the rest and it became the official 'away bit'.

Was in the RE on numerous occasions when the away team scored and parts of the RE erupted in song then violence. Particularly v Palace, Millwall etc. Different era.

I can tell you that this is 1979. I know this becuase i am the young lad crouched above the second L of GILLS and for some reason not looking at the game.

Even got a colour video for yer...

Steve Bruce, Cas, Peacock and watch Brian Moore at the end, brings a memorable tear to my eye.

I remember being crushed in the Rainham End and thinking how many more they going to let in...footballing history unknown at that time.

Yeah, I remember getting Bruce from you.
Saw his first game for Norwich against Liverpool.
A cross came over, I said to my mate, "The new centre half should have this, he's supposed to be pretty handy". Up he went for it, next second we were one down. Bloody waste of money <grr>

I'm fairly sure there was a cover on the corner of the Rainham end in the early-mid 1960's, but memory being what it is I wouldn't even bank my sparse Prediction League points on it!

You are correct Tim. We used to enter that gate in the early 60's for the last twenty minutes when we were skint!
"What's the score mate?"
