Nothing has changed for me since game 1, Top6 and a trophy, the latter has fell away, but the former looks nailed on, as high 4th is unlikely, and I'm glad we never got CL in a way, this squad despite AVB's 'talking up' is no where near strong enough and we'd have been more embarrassing in the CL than Man City. I cannot see Levy making the necessary funds available to change it in one t/window, if by some miracle we did finish 4th, so I'm not fussed. We can compete with our first 11 team in small periods, but not over the course of a season.
Vim, Totally disagree with everything you say. The year on club of fulling constantly flat at the last hurdle has to change. The old bull of not breaking the bank is slowly killing the club as a winning outfit. Blimey as it has been said thousand times nobody saying to spend , spend, spend. This age of policy austerity has netted us 2 decades of nothing, our worse since the great depression. So without a new direction , you are telling me that is acceptable ?
Vim; I think the point of the article was not so much who is responsible for the collapse of these prospective transfers, but a criticism of Levy's " last minute" tactics. In other words, inferring that if Levy didn't employ these methods so much, then he would have left himself time to try and deal with any attempted renegotiation. As it was, time running out in the transfer window was cited by the article as a the main reason for the transfers not going through
I want success as much as anyone (heck, I watched us get relegated!) all I'm saying is that we need to be prudent in doing so. I do experience the same frustration you do, and do wonder if another approach could have succeeded. It's just that I think there is a level we can't cross, we can't compete with, and it would be disastrous to try.
No one is asking us to cripple ourselves vim, we're just asking that we change approach slightly. - that means changing the timings of when we bid, and actually spending a bit of money. We make next to no net spend. - that isn't being competitive in any way shape or form for a CL spot, is it? - not when you think about how much the others around us spend. Must remember that 4th is a qualifying place that isn't guaranteed. - last year we should have been 3rd but couldn't manage it. Since then we've lost players and had a coaching shake up and again, made no net spend to IMPROVE us. Other clubs have, so again we find ourselves in the same position.
