An old expression for someone who was bandy 'he couldn't stop a pig in a jigger'.

Some older gentleman said to me yesterday...

"I like the cut of your jib"

Must be a saying from the ****ing 20's or something. I wonder if @saintanton or @Red Hadron Collider could shed some light on it? <whistle>

Probably based on a nautical term.

    I often used it over the years meaning I like "where you're headed\what you're doing\your idea". :D

It means to like someone's behaviour or manners or style and it is from a nautical term as is three sheets in the wind [you must have heard that one].

There are many phrases in use in the English language that have nautical/naval roots <ok>

You couldn't really get more nautical than where I am to be honest. Just something I've not heard - However a term I will be stealing!

I started watching football around 94/95 but am not much older than you.

In the mid-late nineties we had some excellent players such as Fowler, Macca, Owen, Barnes, Molby, Rednapp, Collymore and a lot of really good players mixed in with the odd dud.

During this period we played attractive attacking football under Roy Evans, the team was fun to watch and people were proud of the effort the team made.

We won a few things and were quite close to winning the league but were not quite as good as United over the stretch of a season - usually lacking in squad depth with our defence not on the same level as our offense.

It was exciting and we still felt, and were, a top club which people respected and wanted to beat.

We had a lot of British and Irish players and it felt like a British club which you could relate to unlike now. Fowler, Owen, Stan, Redknapp, Macca, Barnes, James, Rush, Mcateer, Babb, Ruddock, Jones, Harkness, Mark Wright, Matteo - the names go on.

It is worth mentioning the opposition were interesting as they also had characters and a lot of British players too and it was more spicy as you could actually make a tackle.

Thinking of all this makes me sad of how far we have fallen.

We must not accept mediocrity and the small club mentality than Rodgers is establishing.

We much change things before its too late.

The fun of the nineties and watching local lads playing is long gone.

I was proud back then to be a Liverpool fan, but in recent times if has often become quite embarrassing which the amount of mistakes we make.

Very true, some examples: posh, hand over fist, batten down the hatches, cut and run, loose cannon, high and dry, shake a leg ............
