I could never tell you, because I played in every position, except goalkeeper. I've scored a perfect hat-trick, I've scored 5 goals in one game, one of which was a back heel, at centre or inside forward. I've hit the opposition crossbar from well inside my own half, when the ball was rolled back to me at playing at half back, and I skinned enough fullbacks on either wing to leave me in shoes for life [yuck, sorry]. I played at either FB, and was once LB in the dressing room. IIRC, I was also the penalty taker in every game I played in except one, and I never missed, though the one I remember best was when I nearly did. I also took all the corners, and I know my PT teacher thought I was lazy. He was right, I was. Along with schools football I played in the Tyro League with Taranto Terriers and then Brendon Bombers [Boys]. At school, my Captain [I later took over a few times] was David Stamp, who went onto be in the Saints Youth system, alongside Nick Holmes. I didn't because I played crap in the few games I was being watched. In my late 20's after a few years of not playing anymore, I did the striker's role in 5-a-side and won player of the tournament [our Southampton team won as well] in a national company's 5-a-side competition, in Birmingham. I remember my Leeds opposite number offered to buy me a drink, because he didn't get a decent kick, and I couldn't understand his accent, despite his three attempts to ask me. In the end he did the obvious glass-in-hand mime, and I got it. Still got the little trophy somewhere. I suppose I can definitely say that I never came on as a substitute and I wasn't a goalkeeper.
I was alright. Wouldn't say hell of a player, Wayne Rooney is a hell of a player. Never really got to see how good I was as an injury ruled me out at a very young age. I've played a few games since in the Wessex League and Hampshire league since as a bit of a piss around. I can play anywhere on the pitch at that level other than in goal so can't liken my game to one player. CB a bit like Cannavaro, don't play full back or wide midfield really, normally through the middle. DM, a bit like Keane, AM a bit like Kaka, ST a bit like Rooney CF a bit like Shearer.
Well... it was on concrete and I went in with the intention of breaking the oppo player, simply because they kept taking the ball round me.
I can use both feet but have tended to play on the left in most positions but my preferred position is left midfield. I was always lucky in that the only injuries I sufferred were a badly twisted knee and stretched ligaments in my foot.
I did play in goal in an FA Trophy game for Newport IOW. Our keeper was sick on the coach and I went in gaol .... all 5'8 and a bit of me!! We only lost 1 nil, and I watched the gsme back on video to see my exhibition of "Carry on Goal keeping". I was **** scared to be honest and have a little bit more respect for keepers since then. Consideriing I was a short arse striker, then it was a real shock.
No, I went to watch, but I had started a job up North then and left the club about 3 weeks before that game. Great game. 2 nil down and came back to win 3-2. I went on the pitch at half-time for a kick about though! I played at Hereford for England schools U'18s against Wales.
Not sure if they were "good" saves, more like Unorthodox goal keeping! Do I know you? PM me your name.
I know right! Played for the academy between the ages of 11-13 but i had a dodgey ankle so they let me go and then i got invited to the tournament trail after that. That was back when you had money!!
I was an impact sub most of the time due to my pace. My idol was Henry but ever since Walcott had come on the scene I like ed myself to him. Lived skinning defenders but probably too a touch too far most times. I played as a winger! Then became a Striker and again i was like an impact sub. Best moments were my debut in a 7 a side match in one of those summer tournaments; came on for a player that was injured and first game first touch first goal. And the thing I regret now is that u didn't even celebrate! A few years later I scored form the corner flag. The ball was thrown in down the right line towards the flag and you know where you just turn and smash it high into the box so that happened plus it curling aide f the foot curl on the ball and it went into the far corner
I was REALLY fast (can't remember ever being out-paced) and tough in the tackle, I was a one club player for 17 years. Wayne Bridge presented me with my testemonial tankard. If truth be told I wasn't very skillfull, but I made up for it with determination.
I was an Adam Lallana type player: Play on the left wing and cut inside on my right foot and curl it in the top corner or whip the ball in!! Partly because i had no pace. Some times i play up front a bit like Connolly, because i have no pace i can't play off the shoulder and i'm 5"8 so i'm not exactly a target man either!! I always stand in front of goalie when it is a corner as it really pisses them off and they can't do much about it!! Never got sent off or played against anyone famous did manage to score from a corner Jason Dodd esque!! Played for Everton and Lymington Sprites and junior level. Now at a school where football isn't taken that seriously unfortunately
Some truly epic reads. I hope like me you've all enjoyed sharing your golden moments. I just remembered a few more great football moments from my past.... I once broke a keepers hand with a left footed volley from 40 yards out (I'm predominantly a rightie) I scored 8 goals in one game against Wyvern (tyro league days) and got the headline mention in the old sports echo, or pink (whatever it's called these days) In the old tyro days I used to love the summer six a side tournaments and won a good few, scoring the winning goal in finals twice. I also used too get up at 6am on match days as a youngster and sit in my room with the full football kit on waiting for my dad to take me to footie!
I played for my school team, various teams at under 12/13/14 etc then moved to Sunday league for my local pub. I was fast and aggressive, but only an average player skill wise. I got sent off 6 or 7 times in my first season on Sundays, mainly because I tended to over react to fouls and launch myself at whoever it happened to be who had just raked their studs down my leg because it was the only way to stop me as I flew past. I gained a bit of a reputation, because I didn't care how big they were before trying to smash their faces in, and it provoked more fouls to tempt a reaction. I played left back, and scored a few good goals after running the length of the pitch and finding out that nobody had kept up, so had to put it away myself. Athletics was my sport at school and I had county trials for sprints and long jump (my school long jump record stood for over 20 years), however it was also responsible for most of the injuries that later plagued me when I played footie. I was washed up by the age of 22
Just remembered my bestest goal. well after some thought I selected this one. The hospital cup used to be the ressies/youth playing, but against laverstock it was all youth team and it was my first season as a 15 year old at salisbury after leaving saints. They were wessex league, all men playing against 15-17 year olds. We panned the 5-0 I think, anyway on the break, the left forward broke up to the half way line, I sprinted up the right, cross field ball angled to the corner of the penalty box. Ball bounced once, coming across me leathered it first time in to the far top corner with a little bit of dip and fade into the side of the net. Keeper had no chance.
I played for the school team as a right midfield/winger till bad knees at 17 killed any hope of playing to a reasonable standard. Didnt kick a ball for about 5 years after that then played a few seasons in the Portsmouth sunday leagues before drifting into 5 a side which I loved...played right up until last season when I hung those trainers up aged 41.
