My youngest (girl) is called Kayesha after...........don't know but we always agreed she could choose the name for girls. There is a reason why someone called Stanley would prefer to be known as John. Met a toddler a few days ago called Stanley....all I thought was there were parents who hated their kid. I think it's because people are using names that were outdated when I was young....you wait long enough and everything comes round again.
What if your paternal grandfather had a stupid name, or was a 'Royalist Twat' who you didn't particularly want to commemorate? Interesting idea though, if you want all the males in one family to have the same 3 or 4 names through generations.
I only found out recently that one of my best mates (for the past 30 years) is not actually Paul, He is Alistair Both my Grandad and his eldest son (My dad isn't the eldest) are Stanley but are known as John. Very strange if what you say is true that my Grandad named his son after him if he didn't like the name himself Must be a Winchester or Hampshire thing.
For boys names I like slightly out there ones like Atticus or Artemis. Naming after footballers just seeems silly, what if you had named him after llana? Naming after parents or grand parents is just unoriginal most of the time, though is fine for middle names.
