I think they do it to mask bad wine.

 

Assuming it's the red they served in the Italian restaurant he's in but that could just be a wild stab in the dark.

 

He said he was staying in earlier. So not a wild stab. He could have just recreated an Italian vibe, made a bad risotto, bought a bottle from a one stop and got brb to translate for him.

 

So do the French with some reds.

Still, that's a Merlot, which from experience doesn't suit being chilled or loaded with ice.

Nor is it very Italian but that's another story!
