I think sales in recent seasons have been bigger than ever. Even this most hated Home kit has sold very well.
Take your pick: http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Southampton/Southampton.htm I think it's fair to say that red and white striped shirts are what Saints are recognised as wearing, from a general footballing public's point of view, but there have been varied shirts. Plus many and varied kits overall. White shorts were first, for instance, and then blue shorts lasted until 1950. Even the black shorts of the 1960's had a blue hue to them, though they were undoubtedly classed as black. Blue socks were also predominant throughout the years to the late 1940's. Looking through that link of all the Home kits, I think it's time for red and white quarters to make a return, perhaps with blue shorts and white socks. Certainly different, and traditional. EDIT: Oh, and red boots..!
You know how there is meant to be a historical connection between Athletic Bilbao and Southampton, in that they play in very similar red and white stripes, owing to the fact that one of their representatives came over to the UK and ended up buying a squad load..? Well I stumbled over this little detail: This is the centenary kit of Athletic Bilbao. This is what happens when you persist with stripes and don't quite know what to do next. How about this for a squad photo..?[NSFW] please log in to view this image [/NSFW] Keep a tissue close by. You may need to stuff it in your mouth.
