And disraeli a jew, maggie a methodist.... Never a Catholic. Like i say, there is no constitutional impediment, in no small part because the constitution is not written down. The Act of Settlement specified no Papes. As the monarch has to ascent to the PM taking office this has posed some problem. The monarch is sworn to defend the faith. How does that affect their status if they appoint a PM who does not fulfillbthat function.

You'd think not, the English are eminently more sensible than the yanks but it still is an issue. Look at the fuss when ruth kelly became minister for education.

As you point out above, the monarch has already appointed many PMs who were not of his/her faith so your argument doesn't hold. If the winning party at the next General Election had a Catholic as leader, do you honestly believe that Liz would turn round and say, 'Sorry. You need to pick someone else. We can't have a Catholic PM.'

I suffer "general public rage" whenever I go shopping, driving, etc. One of these days I'll be national news when I go on my rampage. And I'm taking all you ****s with me. <grr>

This post has probably flagged up on a CIA computer deep in the bowels of Langley. A snatch squad is currently on it's way to get me.

Gambol was a nice man. Kept himself to himself. None of us suspected that he had 15 missing children locked up in his basement.

I hate both shopping and driving. Laughing at the Langley reference. I didn't realise it was a real thing until I read some American spy books <laugh>

Remember the rumour that did the rounds a decade ago, where it was said that super computers in the US were picking key works out of electronic conversations looking for terrorists?

And won't I be disapointed if a snatch squad isn't what I'm hoping it is.

The urban myth was that if you sent two emails, one immediately after the other, if the first email contained words like jihad, allah, bomb, infidel it would be received a few seconds after the second email sent.

Tried it. Didn't work. turns out that it was bollocks and that the terrorists used codewords. crafty ****ers these jihadists.
