Harking back to darker days in football, but this one always used to make me smile (even though it probably shouldn't). I was in the old Leazes end that day and the burning (think it was a small rug) went over my head and into the West Ham fans. I remember going home all excited and telling my dad all about it, only to get one hell of a telling off, and threatened with not being allowed to go on my own anymore, for going into the Leazes instead of the West Paddock.....

He's only a poor little Hammer
His clothes are all tattered and torn
    He came for a fight
    So we set him alight
And now he don't come anymore

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

he's only a poor little Hammer.......

I was too young and naive to fully understand what was going on, and certainly wouldn't have been 'boasting' about it to my dad if I had been older. It's a weird one. That song just brings back memories of going to St James' as a youngster. I didn't really know what I was joining in with and I never witnessed anything else up close and never travelled away as a kid. I do remember though, that same year (1980) my dad won the FA Cup Final tickets in the Northumbria FA raffle/lottery. He was a Northern League ref and was also secretary of the Tyneside Amateur league, and every year they would hold a draw to see which ref got 2 tickets from the Northumbran FA. My dad won in 1980 and 81, so took me both years - a big thing in those days. Anyway, as luck would have it we ended up in the West Ham end at Wembley. I remember my dad telling me not to speak a word from the moment we got on the tube before the game, all the way through the game, and on the tube back to Victoria - and we didn't. We spent all afternoon communicating with nudges and pointing. It seemed like overkill to me at the time, but looking back I don't suppose a Geordie accent would have been very popular with West ham fans in 1980.

I only know as ive watched the movie Cass. (Not bad in terms of ****ty football hooligan movies).

They were not impressed with the fire lark and took revenge by turning over some social club. He eventually got sent to nick.

Chants were a lot different then, i.e Harry Roberts is our friend, he kills coppers etc. Racist chants were the norm, but so was kicking **** out of each other inside and out of grounds.

    A lot has changed.
