Yellow - The point I was making was, that Hughton started with a handicap before he even walked in the door, simply because of who he was following, exactly the same as Moyes at Man U. and he´s still having to deal with that even now. I´m not pointing the finger at anyone in particular, but there is a percentage of fans who continue to compare the two, every step of the way. Even on these boards barely a week goes by without a thread or a comment in some way relating to Lambert, either what he would have done here or there, or how much better he was at this , or at that. Some people seem to have got a short memory, when Lambert took over we were at our lowest ebb for years, and it was only ever going to go one way, of course he was going to get us up, I could probably have got us up, because we were never a League 1 side. And when he buggered off and Hughton took over we were at our highest peak for years, fans were disappointed and I dare say some players were disappointed when he left, and realistically we could only probably have expected to go one way again, or at best, keep the status quo, the two situations are totally different.

I mean players that rely on physical attributes. I would say Redmond and Olsson both heavily rely on pace. You are right about Garrido though.

I do like Olsson though, he puts his body on the line to get his body behind a shot.

I think the question that has to be asked is why Lambert hasn't done better at Villa? You could also ask why so many Villa fans are at his throat? Probably because he has brought expensive players in like Benteke and Vlaar, and yet Villa have struggled in the bottom half of the table regardless. My God! They even finished below Norwich last season! How can that be? The answer is that its bleeding difficult in the PL, especially when the injuries pile up. All too easy to blame the manager in both cases. It's never as simple as that.

I couldn't tell you why Villa fans are at his throat. Impatient, possibly, when you think how young their squad is.

When Lambert took over at Villa their squad was absolutely awful. I still don't think it's as good as ours, not as much depth anyway.

There is a minority in every crowd who are never happy in all fairness. Aside from Lambert anyway.

Do you think we've made progress under Hughton?

Maybe the answer is that he isn't that good that he can easily overcome every problem. Much like CH. <ok>

I do think we have, YL, but that it's been handicapped by the number of injuries up to now. With Gutierrez coming in and Pilks and Tettey coming back, Howson and Turner later on, there is the potential for considerable improvement in results over the rest of the season. IMO, CH has done a great job of strengthening the squad and without that, we'd be sunk by the injuries we've had. Yes, we're two points from relegation, but we're also 3 points from 10th place. If we win tomorrow, we'll be even on points with Hull who are currently in 10th place. It's far too early to panic, IMO, and I'd rather what money we have is spent on players than on an managerial change which would cost millions.

I agree, I also think we have a better squad. Although, saying that, I don't think Hughton knows how to get the best out of them. The fact he can't get the strikers to work is really starting to get on my nerves, he's had half a season now. I know RVW has had injuries but honestly, how many clear cut chances have our strikers had this season? Our defence is worse and he continues to stand by the wrongly appointed captain Bassong.

Fer has shown glimpses, but again, doesn't seem to be playing to his full potential.

We saw it last season with him not being able to get Holt firing.

That's honestly my biggest concern. We seem to completely lack ideas going forward and with our defence leaking like a sieve (an area we've been fairly injury free till Turner) I don't really see much progression at all.

    Pretty much agree.

Re team captain - following on from last season, I think Bassong was a good choice, but he's not playing nearly as well as last season, but would it be right to change captain part way through a season????

I said at the time I wanted to Snodgrass to be captain. He has the passion and determination which suits it, and I suppose Holt had. He also seems a popular figure in the changing room. I think on his day Bassong is one of the first names on the teamsheet, but way too laid back to be captain. In all fairness, I have no idea why he has gone off the boil, but I don't imagine being Captain is helping him at the moment.

To me he just doesn't seem like a leader.

As to changing it, I imagine it would be very demoralising for him and he doesn't exactly look full of confidence at the moment. With Turner out we probably can't afford an even more demoralised Bassong.

Pressing need is results and points now! Any action will take weeks to bed in so the big question is different! Can CH adapt, make the best use of resources and opportunities - Can he learn from mistakes for heavens sake? Without this last one we can forget the next crucial three matches

Failure to learn and develop as a manager seems the real issue that bugs me Think how O'Neil, Ferguson, Martinez, Clough, Robson and others learned from things that happened. CH has been around and ought to be improving as a manager by now - just don't see it and is this enough for him to maintain his position?

No No No, Paul Lambert is not the issue.

Chris Hughton is the issue. He picks the players, buys the players, sets the formation, the training staff, the tactics for our football club.

Paul Lambert manages Aston Villa now, stop bringing him up.

Not me bringing him up, old boy

    http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/245755-The-things-people-like-to-see-(and-we-do-none-of-them)

I draw your attention to lines 6 and 7 from the bottom of the thread.........

"Think of his predecessor and they are all the things we got almost every game."

which just confirms what I said in the post above, a certain percentage of fans do still compare the two of them.

Try going through my many hundreds of posts on the subject Royal, you won't find much about Lambert.

In this instance however the comparison was very apt.
