Rivalry has a quite specific definition and it would be accurate to say that Swansea have renewed their rivalry with Cardiff. We will have to wait quite a long time before we can renew our rivalry with Pompey. In the meantime Saints and Pompey fans will go on disliking each other and insulting each other but the rivalry is on hold until we get the chance to play each other again. At this moment in time Pompey do not rival us for anything whatsoever. The best definition of rivalry I found was: Competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field.
The League or FA Cup seems most likely means by which we'll play Pompey, presuming no calamities cause us to fall from grace. The rivalry will still continue with Pompey, not with another club and we'll all still smirk when the tannoy announcer tells us how badly they lost in League 2 this week.
Forget probability it is possible that we play them next season in the cup - its also possible we could play Brighton Bournemouth and a host of near neighbours - lets face it Portsmouth is a rival that for most will be the true rival for others they are free to move wherever they wish - lets just get on with it!
would love if we used Pompey as a feeder club for the youth players, we could almost have an entire first team and subs bench with our youth like Stephens,Rowe and Sinclair and other players like de Ridder if they wanted to see out the end of thier contracts. Would screw them if we drew them in a cup though and our players could not play. It would put the U21s side behind for a couple of years but would really benifit the players
Our promising young players will need more than a league two football club to help them develop. Bournemouth would be a far better place for them to go. A better club with better facilities and playing in a higher league and going places.
its true Bournmouth has many advantages, the main advantage of Portsmouth is that they can not afford players so we could basically have a saints team 2 like in Spain, where the whole team are basically saints players playing how we want them to play
My mum (who used to teach in a middle school in Millbrook) researched a lot of local history. I'll have to ask her where she unearthed that particular gem. I believe Southampton City Council has a big archive of historical data.
Rival and local derby can be the same team but is rarely so unless we are talking about rival fans rather than the football. Pompey is our local derby but there has hardly ever been any rivalry (on the field) because we've hardly ever been in the same league. So Pompey be they in division 4 or 15 will always be our local derby. West Ham will have to be our rival hopefully only until the end of next season when we can pick again
The new plans for the riverbank stand are awesome. http://www.fulhamfcstadium.com/construction-phase/
