The disappearance of the typical British couple on 99% of the adverts these days. Cannot elaborate any further without the danger of being labeled a racist. That is woke for you.
And I'm so old that I remember the days when anyone disagreeing with Labour policies was a Tory. Now they are Far Right and dangerous.

Having an opinion about something that's not in your control seems to sum up germ of the problem, and opinions are like arseholes, we've all got one. The magnification that social media gives to those who are outraged on one side or the other regarding an issue now becomes the issue. So, if in the past an outraged pensioner in Chipping Sodbury wrote to the Telegraph about the latest thing that upset them,. The chances of magnifying it into a national outcry would be limited by the propensity of the Telegraph to campaign on that issue following responses from the readership. Now the mainstream media has suffered a near fatal blow to their business model due to social media growth and competition from diverse platforms, and all of us have a social media device to hand for many of our waking hours, through which we choose which platforms to frequent. They are inclined to use the social media bubble to grow a story and so maintain their own relevance. If anything 'anti-woke' could therefore be described as a cry for help by those elements of the media who are seriously threatened by the commercial implications of losing most of their paid readership.

Someone suggested recently that they were so upset at Trump being elected that they would boycott American products. Can't remember whether they were using an Apple or an Android phone, but I wished them luck boycotting their phone.

You are literally elaborating that the problem you have is race related.

He is referring to the fact that many tv adverts and indeed programs now feature mixed race couples. He is perhaps (without putting words in his mouth) asking if this is a realistic reflection of the way things are? Having lived in various parts of the country, I have known 2 mixed race couples in my lifetime. One couple live in the South of the Country, and one in the North. Maybe in certain parts of the country, mixed race relationships are more prevalent, and tv is just reflecting life as it is - but in my experience, far more people marry / live with/ enter relationships with someone of their own colour and if that is the case, then TV is not reflecting how things are - but perhaps how they would wish them to be?

With the caveat that I come to this as someone who is White, straight and male, (and those who are not all of those things will see things differently) should people who are not those things be (if they are being) over represented on TV or should there be some sort of proportional representation on TV? If, for example, 5% of the country (don't know if that % is correct) belongs to the BAME community, should 5% of the characters and actors on TV come from BAME? Same for other minority groups. Or is it right that minority groups are (if they are being) given over-exposure? Is it the job of the TV people to give an accurate reflection of where the country is in terms of ethnicity, sexuality, gender etc. or are they purely there to entertain?

Commenting on race related things doesn’t mean you are a racist.

That doesn’t diminish the point he was making. 83% of the population is white,4% is black. We hear about equality and diversity and the BBC saying they want to reflect the country. So why are more than 4% of their presenters, pundits etc black? Seem to be far more of them than Asians who have twice their numbers in the UK.

Anyone who saw the KCOM advert knows what he is referring to.

Fair enough, RT - being able to avoid seeing gurning ****s selling cleaning products and insurance is the best thing that streaming has allowed.

The original was not censored - the replacement of the word ***got with haggard was far more recent

I have no idea about the racial make-up of actors in tv adverts as I don't watch them, I was more surprised someone does as it's fairly easy to avoid them permanently.

In theory, you're right. But commenting on race related things, almost weekly, over a 20 year period on several different forums under several different usernames might be a clue, Castro.

Adverts do definitely have a more diverse range of people in them than they used to. Mixed race couples, gay couples. So what?

If you live here then you will see TV adverts. And they don’t reflect the demographics of this country. And the KCOM was a prime example, especially in a city with one of the highest percentage of white people in the country.

If you’re so keen on proportional representation on TV I’m surprised you aren’t campaigning for the BBC to hire more women. An Ofcom study from 2018 found that only 38% of people on the BBC are women, despite being 50.8% of the population.

The same study found that 12.5% of people appearing on the BBC are minorities, despite being 13.7% of the population. If anything, minorities are slightly under represented on TV.
