(From DMD's, imo excellent, earlier post) .... I've read a few people claiming these issues are about respect, but they tend to take a very narrow view of which opinions should be respected.

As a couple of examples, if someone wants to delude themselves they are some other gender or creature, that's their choice, however, whilst I wouldn't try to change them or even pass comment unless they raise it, my choice is to find it ridiculous. That being the case, they should respect my opinion, and not force me to join in their fantasy games by calling him her etc.

Likewise, religious people can worship whatever sky pixie they like, until they push their beliefs onto others. I can't commit blasphemy if I find their belief system to be based on a provable fantasy.

I think the people that claim none of these things are happening should consider why people feel the need to soap box in support of what others laugh at as 'woke' for the want of a description.

Some people just seem to love labels and binary thinking.
And there you quite clearly show you do exactly what the people you disagree with do. You are also delusional and refuse to view an opposing view as valid

Surely the point is that DMD isn't going round ramming his opinions down people's throats, trying to get society to accept & conform with his view of reality, to convert people, etc etc. It's surely fine having a personal opinion and giving that in a discussion, just as DMD posted. And as he then eloquently posted, it's a totally different thing that some try to force others (society) to join in (and adjust to) their fantasy games.

But doesn’t that work both ways?

In one world trans people exist (and multiple genders have been accepted in many cultures throughout history - it’s not just a modern thing).

In another world - trans people don’t exist as it’s your biological sex that determines your gender.

Can both worlds coexist without each other thinking the other is being disrespectful? I don’t think they can.

If you think the latter world is true - that is also forcing your views on others - particularly thinking that trans women/men shouldn’t be referred to as the gender they prefer. If you think the former world is true - you don’t understand why people can’t just be ‘respectful of your wishes’.

Who gets to decide the world which is and isn’t ’forcing their views on others?’

It’s complicated and I don’t think there’s an easy answer.

Lol - its a left wing definition that supports left wing issues - people who describe themselves as woke tend to be anti semitic, ie racist and tend to be blinkered and bigoted to the rights of the vast majority, especially women and children which is why the the use of the word woke has evolved into one that describes a person who is blind to anything but their own biased point of view and totally intolerant of anyone who doesn't agree with that point of view which is why I put every woman's safety ahead of a handful of men who want to wear a dress and I put every child's safety ahead of a group of men who see them as sex objects to pass around -being woke means womens safety and children's safety is not that important compared to that of the perpetrator

I think the whole country has become ‘woke’ from politics to the bloke walking down the street. Everybody is scared to death of offending someone. If your opinion differs slightly your either far right or far left. The first of which our Prime Minister loves brandishing people.

You assume that I'm offended? It's just sad that adults are regurgitating poor jokes from the 80's that I heard on the school playground.

There are literally people on this thread who are offended by the scores not being relayed in attendance order. <doh>

Why complain about it then? Maybe the jokes are "poor" to you - to others they may well be funny. Others may feel they are examples of good jokes standing the test of time. Or are you now the laughter police?

If only it was just about "respect".

I don't think it's complicated at all. It seems to me that some make it complicated. It never was.

The phrase is bandied about often enough. That is the sort of silly response you expect from some.

I have no problem with you having an opinion. I merely pointed out earlier that the thread you seem to dislike is called the Offensive Jokes thread and if you don't like that sort of thing you don't have to read it. Others will enjoy said thread, and not consider the jokes either sad or dated
