Enemy Good little performance by James Gyllenhaal, but perhaps a little too weird. Watchable enough, though. Annabelle Silly horror film but does what it says on the tin.
Cop car A little gem of a movie starring Kevin Bacon and Shea Whigham. Two young boys run away from home and come across an empty police car in the middle of nowhere. They take the car and the **** hits the fan. Good performances all round but especially Whigham who seems to be the go to supporting actor these days. Good story with a few twists and very funny in places. 8/10
Downesfall: Hitler's last hours waiting in the shelter for a 52 bus. It's all in German and he dies at the end. A Jewish bloke nips his burd as well and he gets well angry. 5/8 please log in to view this image
Straight outta Compton. Being a numpty, white Scots lad NWA kinda passed me by. Don't get me wrong, even this wee teenage scumbag could relate to some of their lyrics. Mainly. ...**** the police. This film tells their story. Or probably producer Dr Dre's version of their story. It's all good though. It's a wee bit too long and there's far too much focus on **** that disne matter like parties and such like. The acting from the leads is good though and the soundtrack is excellent. All in all a pretty decent film motherfuckers. Feel me blud. 7/10
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle A little cheesy by modern standards but entertaining nevertheless. 7/10 The Gift A thoroughly enjoyable watch. Joel Edgerton steals the show as an actor and director. 8/10
The Maze Runner: Meh, like Hunger Games but falls a bit short. It's no Battle Royale for sure but okayish. 6/10
Mission Impossible Rogue Nation. **** and I actually paid to see it. Really begs the question, has anyone on these movies ever actually watched the original series. Not one fcking film holds true to the original concept. Fcktards!
I think the whole film series needs a reboot...without Tom Cruise. Such a simple concept the TV series was and yet so effective. Undercover espionage all about deception, bluff and double bluff. The film franchise has turned it into a run of the mill spy action movie. It's like turning Columbo into a run of the mill "who done it" caper
watched Lesbian Vampire Hunters on the Beeb late last night. Horne and Corden reprising their unfunny personas from Gavin and Stacey in a, frankly, poor attempt at a horror spoof. it looks to have been written by a bunch of chimps with typewriters, directed and edited by the same. **** 'jokes' and poor all around. some of the Lesbo Vamps were good looking tho so 2/10
I'll be honest, even if there was nothing on, I'd not watch that. Modern British comedies on the whole are best avoided I find, there are a few notable exceptions I'll admit, but none of them have James Corden in them.
Southpaw Every cliche from every boxing movie is dusted down and inserted in this film. Some on several occasions. Brawler fights his way out of the gutter to the very top only to see it all come crashing down. Brawler finds trainer who turns him into a "real boxer". Brawler wins it all back. Pah, i hear you say, what a load of tosh. Not so. This actually a pretty good film. This is mainly due to the performance of Jake Gyllenhaal. He is terrific in it.The fight scenes are also great. If you can ignore the blatent rip off of the rest of the film you are in for a treat. 7/10 Gone baby gone Caught this on film4 the other night. Excellent thriller starring Casey Affleck. Affleck, like Gyllanhaal is very reliable. He gives a great performance as a hard nosed Boston private eye brought into to locate a missing child. There's a few twists and turns in the plot and the cast all do an excellent job. So does the director who, as i have just discovered, is Casey's brother Ben. 8/10
Old boy I had never seen this film, or it's remake. I have seen a lot of people comment on how good it was. So when i came across a channel on XBMC dedicated to Korean,Chinese,Japanese movies and this was on it i gave it a watch. Pretty mental stuff tbh. All in all i'd say it was decent enough. I recognised the lead actor and after some indepth research it turns out he was lead in another mental Korean film, I saw the devil. I'm sure i have mentioned it somewhere in this thread. If you like Old Boy, watch that. You will love it. 7/10
Both films are excellent Aldo. I got into Korean cinema about 12 years ago after watching Jonathon Ross do a show about Japanese and Korean cinema. Old Boy is outstanding I would actually give it 10. If you liked it it's part of a trilogy. The first part of the vengeance trilogy is Sympathy for Mr Vengeance which is bloody good. Old Boy is the second and the final one is called Lady Vengeance it's the weakest, but still far better than the crap released today. Kim Jee-Won the director of "I saw the devil" also directs a brilliant Korean gangster film called, " A bittersweet life" , "Two sisters" a really creepy ghost story and the utterly bizarre , "The good, the bad and the weird" which is not about the Celtic forum, but is a really mental take on "The good, the bad and the ugly". He recently popped up in hollywood doing that Arnie movie, "The Last stand" Another guy to check out is Kim Ki-Duk his films are the strangest of them all. They always feature a mute character. "Bad Guy" and "The Isle" are particularly good. He's brought out wads and they are always interesting. Random Jap/Korean ones you might like are, "Dumplings", "Battle Royale" (pretty well known), "i'm a cyborg", "The Eye", "Audition", "Thirst", "9 Iron", "Save the green planet" and one ST put me onto called "Fish story" which was brilliant.
If you are to watch Asian cinema then Kurosawa is a must. The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood and the hugely influential Rashomon. Some of my favourite movies of all time.
I've got to see some of these. I've only seen Seven Samurai and Ip Man. Loved both but never know what to watch when it comes to oriental films. Oh yeh nearly forgot, Kung Fu Hustle. Loved that too.
