Hollywood's homage to 'Bumfights' . Grudgematch . Bob , you have officially hit rock bottom . Where did it all go wrong ?
Watched Ghost Story (1974) a strange low quality Hammer Horror type affair where three splendid chaps who knew each other from Cambridge spend a weekend in a creepy old house. Marianne Faithful and Penelope Keith were the only members of the cast I'd heard of. According to wikipedia, one of the cast, Vivian MacKerrell, was the inspiration for the character Withnail.
Watched.... Out Of The Furnace, very good. Captain Phillips, also good. Enough Said, good film. Good watching all weekend.
Elysium and After Earth over the weekend. I liked them. Going to give either Escape Plan or Now You See Me a go tonight.
Watched Hanna Bi again last night - awesome film if you don't mind watching Japanese films with subtitles.
At the risk of getting some pelters ... The brother-in-law and his family came up to us for his boy's tenth birthday on 30th December - the lad has just recently got into Harry Potter and is mad for it - so they secretly booked tickets for them and us (got 2 girls aged 8 and 13) to go to the Warner bros Harry Potter film set near Watford as a birthday treat and stayed over with us. Never been on a film set before and frankly it's bloody fantastic - would recommend to everyone - the Great Hall (at Hogswarts) is worth the entrance money alone ... Anyway, on the back of that we ended up watching all the films again since - it's great seeing secnes that are on the sets - the acting from the 3 mains in the first film is akin to a school play but by the last film is not bad at all tbf - and didn't the series attract some star names! - my particular favourite has to be Alan rRckman as Professor Snape - wonderful actor.
If you'd have told the truth and said you'd watched Harry Potter on your own you would have got hammered. Because you did the right thing and concocted a story about a child's birthday and threw your own kids into the mix to show that you went along reluctantly just becasue you're a good dad you'll escape - good work
Really? I knew nothing of baseball when I saw it (and I don't mean "just not a fan", I mean I didn't actually know how the thing's played) and I liked it quite a lot. Can't say how much I missed on account of having no background in baseball, but what I did get and enjoyed was stuff that's common to all sports like the different scouting methods, performance-evaluation methods, the old boys' valuation of "experience" being confronted with new ways of doing things, the unknowability and drama of the game, the inside politics of a club's management... I thought all these things were handled really well and in a refreshingly honest, anti-Hollywood way. Only thing that got on my nerves at times was Brad Pitt's character being a real prick to pretty much everyone around him.
Dallas buyers club . Mathew McConaughey , wtf has happened to him ? He used to be a bit of eye candy and not much else . Now he's a super dooper Hollywood great . Over the last couple of years he has certainly been on a roll . He has even made a film where he keeps his shirt on . Not this one though , his shirt is off all the time . Mibbe because when it's on he barely fills it . Talk about living a role . MM must have been on an Ethiopian diet on the run up to filming this role . Another excellent film based on a true story . There seems to be a run on them just now . Did MM get an Oscar nomination for this . He certainly deserves one imo .
Turns out the Oscar nominations were announced today and MM has in fact been nominated . Well deserved .
In the middle of watching Riddick. Avoid this film at all cost. It's hours of your life you won't get back. It's utter **** of the highest degree, pure unadulterated dross.
