I did't watch the game - only saw highlights. No way was that a foul by Caulker. Dempsey - very marginal. Anyway, I was under the impression that, in these circumstances, the benefit of any doubt is supposed to go to the attacking team. As to the officiating - very poor. I just hope Platini was paying attention! It should hardly come as a surprise, to any experienced match official, that Italian teams employ these tactics - they're renowned for it. It should be an officials job to moderate their behaviour, not seemingly endorse it!
I think you had to see it to see how bad it was. With an outrageous call, you think, what the hell is wrong with that official? In this game after a while you knew perfectly well. Others have pointed out the ref set the tone early by calling a non foul on Spurs and ignoring one on Lazio, then made a nice statement by ending the first half before time.
But I ran across this quote which sums up how pleased I was with how Spurs' played.
"The result was a travesty, 3-0 would have been about right, and the opposition were a disgrace. I thought they were utterly outclassed, on and obviously off the pitch. Tottenham look excellent. For the last few seasons, and speaking as a neutral, there's no team I'd rather watch."
We'll have to see how we do, especially against the best teams. But assuming everyone got through this game more or less in one piece, it was very encouraging, including an excellent response to adversity by team and manager. I'm hoping this is the kind of experience that helps bond teams and adds to their determination.
. We might see a chance of luck then.
