Good partnership here, will do Lawrence the world of good to get the 50.

Fingers crossed he can turn it into a 100

I wouldn't mind being out in Barbados watching this, viewing it at home not so much fun.

As has been said got to aim for a big score, so we can set attacking fields to winkle them out.

Sir Joe Root atm(last 13 mos) has got to be the best batsman in the world.

I read earlier he has scored over 1,000 runs more in 12 months than the 2nd highest player :emoticon-0102-bigsm

I appreciate the pitch is rubbish, but it's lovely to see our 3 and 4 putting on a decent stand

Yeah the pitch is probably worse for the bowlers... but the ball 'isn't coming onto the bat' and the outfield is slow...so scoring is difficult. But a big first innings score (when did we last have one of those ) could set us up for a rare win. Following the debacle in Oz.

I am going to say it. Root is the best English batsmen I have seen, and we have had a few.

He's got every shot in the book and is finally starting to convert those 50s into 100s

Listening to cricket can be a thing of beauty. Test match special is a british art form to be proud of.

I love TMS, even the country cricket commentary can be a welcome distraction while working during the summer days

It feels like we are re-learning how to play test matches. Slow and steady, no risks, build a first innings and play from there. For years it feels like we have been chasing and rebuilding. 5 days is such a long time.

Since Cook retired we have not had a decent opener. Also a problem with no 3 batter Root is trying himself there again.

We struggled to replace Strauss, even by the time Cok retired 6 years later we still hadn't replaced him. 2010-11 really was a golden era for English cricket. How do you go about replacing a top order like this:

    Strauss
    Cook
    Trott
    Pietersen
    Bell
    Collingwod
    Prior

and that's before you get on to the subject of Swann, Anderson & Broad

Holder is a cock! Young lad scores 91 and Holder, after bowling utter tosh to him all day, goes on like he’s just got prime Botham out. He got 91 man. Give it a rest

  20. As long as 244 for 3 doesn't become 275 for 8 after the first hour today.....we have form!!
Another 50 fom Root and 70 or 80 apiece from Stokes and Bairstow will have us in full control of this match....please,please,...no collapse!
