brilliant performance today at wembley, 1st goal was goal of the season. bad luck cheltenham, you cannot miss so many chances at wembley. well done crewe, league 1 here we come

I have said for quite a while Crewe would go up, so I'm delighted in that regard as it makes me look as though I have a modicum of intelligence!

I think they'll do very well in League One, dark horses for another promotion IMO.

I dunno - 18 matches unbeaten is terrific. They are a footballing side which will be more suited to League One than League Two, and don't have any irreplaceable players - even Powell. Whilst he is clearly a cut above, I reckon they could attract a player whose current ability (definitely not potential, Powell will be an England international) is comparable with the cash they get.

£4,000,000 is the expected transfer fee, and whilst I know they have £1,000,000 to write off from last year's loss and an expensive academy, it's still a huge amount. £1,000,000 can be written off - they're now debt free. They've received £500,000 in transfer fees for scholars already this season, so the academy has been paid for this season. £500,000 of the Powell money could then be put towards next years academy costs, and another £500,000 in the coffers to provide a financial buffer. That leaves £2,000,000, which is a huge sum. Add to that the money raised from promotion, and they're in no need to sell any other players. They can then sign a replacement for Powell (although that isn't their natural way, I suspect they'll have to spend next year) and another top player whilst still having about a million in the bank and not having to pay for their academy for the next twelve months.

So I think they'll do alright. I could be wrong, though!

It would be nice to sell on a couple of players a year but unfortunately the new rules coming in will destroy lower league clubs making decent earnings this way.

Well done to Crewe on getting the win and giving us a decent away game venue accessible by train.

You could be right but, as my son pointed out to me when I said something similar, a £4m fee is likely to be broken down into instalments based on appearances etc. I'm going to throw in a "me to" - I said in March that I fancied Crewe would win the play offs if they could get into the top 7!

Shame about Cheltenham as I know it well and it's a much nicer place to visit than Crewe. But Crewe is an easy away trip to make - the journey I mean, not the result!

That is a good point. If I were in charge of Crewe's transfers, I'd refuse to sell unless at least 75% of the fee was paid up front; it's not like that's even a lot for Manchester United.

It took us ages to get the money out of mega-mega rich Man City
