Well, fifth place or bust then.

  1. Possibly a League One side if Blackburn or Millwall fall much further in the league <laugh>

A nation is allowed up to four teams in any one of the European competitions. Since we currently have four in the CL, one of them has to be sacrificed to make way for an English winner. Should an English team win the Euro[a League they are simply added to the roster.

However, since the English teams have done so poorly this season, there is a chance we could slip down the pecking order meaning our allocation could change (not sure when this would take effect from). Dropping one level would mean three CL and four EL teams which would obviously swap the above scenario around <ok>

Uefa coefficients run over last 5 years. England is just ahead of Germany but along way ahead of Italian teams. This means 3rd place in prem would need to play a qualifier as well as 4th if Germany overtakes England as seems likely. It is unlikely england would lose one of its cl places to Italy in the foreseeable future.

  3. Fair enough, I have no idea on the positioning or countries in these rankings and, to be quite honest, nor do I actually care that much, I just know that if a nation does bad they risk European places <ok>

Yeah that's basically it. Based on the rankings and the fact German teams are doing well in the champs league and the English teams are all out its likely that 3rd place in our league will have to qualify for next years group stages whereas Germany's 3rd place will go straight to group stage.

Worst case scenario Spanish and German clubs continue to do well and Italian football has a resurgence it is conceivable that in 3-4 years a club will have to finish top 3 for champs league and top 4 just for Europa league.

I think this would be the epl's worst nightmare

  5. I could be wrong by a year or so but I think we've only had four places since 2003 anyway <ok>

There's zero chance of the EL place dropping to the league placings. You'll need to finish 5th to get a place.

    3rd won't have to play a Qualifier, only 4th:
    http://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/access2013.html

Also, qualification allocation and seedings for the 2013/4 CL and Europa are based on the 2012 ranking. Its always one year behind.

Best site for up date ranking and info is Berts site:

Thanks for that Tobes. It's not that hard to understand - us (or you) need fifth place to qualify for the EL. Wigan, Blackburn or Millwall will qualify with Swansea and fifth place.

Only grey area - if Spurs or chelsea win the EL but finish fifth, is another place created? Don't think so - when we won the Uefa in '01 and qualified for the CL it never. If Newcastle win it they go back in, but no need for a further place.

    that's what i think anyway.

    In a word.....No.

They'd have already qualified via their league place & wouldn't require any *ahem* 'assistance' in being able to defend their crown.

Unlike Real Madrid in 2000? Or what the FA promised Chelsea and Arsenal in 2004 before their CL qf? :emoticon-0105-wink:

I dont think anyone else has mentioned it but there is a Scenario that means the 6th placed team in the League would qualify for the Europa League!

If the cup winners have already qualified for the Europa league by their league position, then the Cup winners spot would revert to the next place league team.

Given Utd's and City's League position, it would require Chelsea to win the FA cup and finish Fifth, unlikely but far from impossible

If Wigan/Blkburn/Millwall win the FA cup: Europa places/seeding is: FA cup winner - 5th - Swansea
If Utd or City win the FA cup: Europa places/seeding is: 5th - Swansea - FA cup runner up
If Chelsea win the FA cup and get top4: Europa places/seeding is: 5th - Swansea - FA cup runner up
If Chelsea win the FA cup and are 5th: Europa places/seeding is: (Chelsea)FA cup winner - 6th - Swansea
If Chelsea win the FA cup and are lower than 5th: Europa places/seeding is: (Chelsea)FA cup winner - 5th - Swansea

    Wrong.

If the cup winners have already qualified for Europe then the EL place goes to the runner up.

Therefore the place will go to either Wigan, Blackburn or Millwall.

    No your Wrong.

If the FA cup winners have qualified for the Champions League it goes to the FA cup runners up.

However, If the FA cup winners have qualified for the Europa League in 5th place, THEY WILL STILL QUALIFY AS FA CUP WINNERS (as its the higher seeding) so the 5th place goes to 6th and the FA cup runners up don't get in.

Thought I'd made that clear by listing all the possibilities.

JUST TO CLARIFY WHY YOUR WRONG:

    Redistribution rules
A Europa League place is vacated when a team qualifies for both the Champions League and the Europa League, or qualifies for the Europa League by more than one method. When a place is vacated, it is redistributed within the national association by the following rules:
When the domestic cup winners (considered as the "highest-placed" qualifier within the national association with the latest starting round) also qualify for the Champions League, their Europa League place is vacated. As a result, either of the following teams qualify for the Europa League:
The domestic cup runners-up, provided they have not yet qualified for European competitions, qualify for the Europa League as the "lowest-placed" qualifier (with the earliest starting round), with the other Europa League qualifiers moved up one "place".
Otherwise, the highest-placed team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa League qualifiers which finish above them in the league moved up one "place".
When the domestic cup winners also qualify for the Europa League through league position, their place through the league position is vacated. As a result, the highest-placed team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa League qualifiers which finish above them in the league moved up one "place" if possible.
For associations where a Europa League place is reserved for the League Cup winners, they always qualify for the Europa League as the "lowest-placed" qualifier (or as the second "lowest-placed" qualifier in cases where the cup runners-up qualify as stated above). If the League Cup winners have already qualified for European competitions through other methods, this reserved Europa League place is taken by the highest-placed league team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions.
A Fair Play place is taken by the highest-ranked team in the domestic Fair Play table which have not yet qualified for European competitions.

That's not as I read it.

"Should the FA Cup winners, runners-up (if applicable) and the Football League Cup winners already have qualified for Europe, their place goes to the next best placed clubs in the Premier League"

    http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/fans/faqs/who-qualifies-to-play-in-europe/

Wigan, Blackburn & Millwall won't have qualified for Europe by any other means & would therefore surely take the last place?

EDIT: I'm wrong, apologies, never come across that one before.
