Had we not tried it we wouldn't have learnt it didn't work. You lot may be happy to look forwards to next season when a lot more teams will have worked out our system but I want to see a back up plan and without trying things out, we won't know what works for us.
I agree that we need to have an alternative. But i still don't get this when we are found out bit. Every team bar 2 have played us twice. Now call me old fashioned but managers are paid a lot of money and have vast scouting talent available to them. I would have thought that after 1 game they would have worked out how we play and what they feel they should do to nulify it. If we play to the quality we have and the quality we hope we bring in.Tthen there is no need fro the start of any game to change our system. The only need to change is if we are losing and chasing a game. But, why look for an alternative to what has worked for us for as long as it has.
....unless Plan A isn't working or is unsuited to the opposition. Tinkering prior to the first whistle unnecessarily was foolish imo. And so it proved. Unnecessary because Wolves are a poor side that would have been beaten with Plan A - and we'd be 10th!
It was good to try a different formation and the first half was spectacular. The second half saw us lose our bottle and as long as Nathan Dyer gets in an attacking position, then turns around and passes backwards, we will never score enough goals to win matches. We need to go for the jugular
Yes, they would have been beaten but what will we have learnt? Maybe Buck is thinking next season we will play 3 at the back, rangel, ash and taylor?
According to BBC Sport,Roy Hodgson has been approached to be next England Manager. So it's Brendan to The Hawthorns now,I guess.
As what was mentioned by a poster (Stid) on another thread. I thought when you play 3 at the back, it's with 3 centre-backs, not 1 & 2 full-backs. So I'm not sure Ash, Taylor & Rangel is something we could use... When sides played this type of formation in the past, they still had their full-backs/wing-backs on the pitch. So you had them for the attacking (overlapping) purpose & you could call on them defensively too!! We were so narrow at the back 1st half yesterday, their wide boys totally exploited this...
Probably would have been better to play a 3-5-2 with someone dropping back to provide cover when needed, going 3 at the back for the entire game with what we have got is not an option really
I like the fact Brendan has got other formations in mind. Obviously, it did expose us defensively yesterday though, the plus side being the fluidity of our attack with it. Maybe it's something, with the right players, we might see again. Wigan have been using 3 at the back recently. What did concern me though, was the fact there was only 1 full-back (Taylor) selected in the match day squad!! If, as what happened, it all went 'tits-up'!!
