Not kicking a ball hard enough. Do you remember the old west paddock next to the leazes end? By the corner flags it had these sloping concrete bits that you could sneak up onto if the policeman was down by the dugouts. It was the only way of sort of sitting down and still being able to see the game, and my dad used to make me get there well before 2pm to avoid the rush if I was going on my own, so my legs were always knackered by the time it got to the second half. Anyway, the ball was cleared out for a corner and we were losing. The ball headed straight for me and Peter Withe was signalling for me to kick it to him quickly. I seized my moment of glory in front of everyone in the stadium.....and completely miskicked. The ball went about three feet. Seeing as I was only about 9, I can't repeat what he said, but the F-word was used and the look he gave me nearly made me **** myself to add to my embarrassment. He was a ****ing scary bloke when you're only nine years old!!
I used to stand in the East stand paddock. At the start of the second half, Withe always used to start the game on the wing, shaking his fists at the crowd to get them going. Certainly not the most gifted, but a forward I held in high regard.
He always tried, and for all his goals, some decent ones, one thing that sticks in my mind was him blazing a penalty over the bar.
Was that penalty miss against the mackems in a league cup penalty shootout? I remember, almost like it was yesterday, when he scored the only goal in the 1982 European Cup final......"It's Peter Withe!"
Aye - lucky ****er. Bet no-one swore at him when he mis-kicked it from about 6 inches out to score!!! He was a weird looking footballer. Think he took a sicky every time it was leg day in the gym!
Can't wait for Leeds next year, lived there for three years at uni and go back whenever I can so it has a place in my heart! Went to a couple of games at Elland Road, including the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal where Bradley Johnson scored this facemelter!
Once saw him at back to back homw games walking back up, said hello both times. Remember when he was playing for us in the 90's he went to open a football coaching course that people in my year at school went to, without going myself I ended up with 4 signed Peter Beardsley photo's.
If referring to Pedro I always thought he was best in a second striker role. Best NUFC midfielder for me was Gazza. Absolutely unbelievable in his much to short time playing for us.
