A great start to the meeting for favourite backers with four jollies (one joint) in the first four races. Perhaps I should quit while I am slightly ahead...

Anybody still following Coeur de Lion in the opener must have very deep pockets as he looks well and truly a nearly horse. He re-opposes Kloud Gate after they took the places last time out but that one has not won for three years so I would not touch either of them. Is Piedita another Prescott improver? Will Johnston’s Dominating suddenly rediscover last season’s form at a big price?

Instead I look to NORTHWEST FRONTIER for Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan. He has won three of his last four and was beaten by Euchan Glen in the other, is clearly progressive and I think he can be switched off in mid division to give him every chance of seeing out the extra half mile today. This race has a reputation for being won by dual-code horses but Lil Rockerfeller has not run on the flat for three years, so rising 10lb over hurdles does not make it a handicap snip when the obstacles are removed.

It will need a commanding performance in the Sussex Stakes from someone to make this actually look like a good Group 1 contest. Without Parole lines up unbeaten after mastering Gustav Klimt at Ascot but the fourth that day did nothing for the form on Tuesday, non-stayer US Navy Flag won the July Cup and Threeandfourpence won a four-runner race at Naas. Ordinarily, Andre Fabre’s visitors command respect but the fact that the bookies have Orbaan at double-digit prices tells us all we need to know.

The four older horses only boast one win between them this term and Lightning Spear always finds at least one too good at the highest level. Today I think it will at least be EXPERT EYE (3/1), back at the scene of his spectacular triumph in the Vintage Stakes. James Doyle can continue his purple patch but I do not expect to see him or the favourite challenging before the last two hundred yards.

Goodwood 15.35. Money has been coming for Beat the Bank. Beat the Bank and Expert Eye both won at Ascot on gf in equally fast times. The former all out in a tight finish and carries 7lb more today whilst the latter drawing right away to win easily, carries the same weight. One would expect Expert Eye to be progressing more than Beat the Bank. So, I would expect Expert Eye to come out on top. However, Expert Eye's race was over a furlong shorter than today and his only run over a mile was a dismal effort in the 2000 Gns. He was carried right and impeded entering final furlong but wasn't making any progress at the time. Can we forgive Expert Eye that run and expect him to run up to his Ascot and last year's Goodward form over today's mile? Well, his sire was an out and out sprinter, the dam wasn't up to much but the female pedigree line is strong. I can see why Beat the Bank is being backed, but I think Expert Eye's class will see him win this duel. Whether he can beat Without Parole is a different kettle of fish. Without Parole covered the Ascot mile in a faster time than Beat the Bank, is 6lb better off today and must be improving. But he is without Dettori today.

I'm expecting Without Parole to win this but have Expert Eye as a saver

Goodwood 13.50. 2.5 miles, anything could happen. Coeur de Lion just about has the beating of Kloud Gate. Lil Rockerfeller hasn't run on gf since 2015; didn't seem to like it and hasn't run on it since. I suspect 2.5 miles on this firm ground might not be to his liking. Northwest Frontier is in fine form and could outpace these in a tactically, slowish, race. So I think to cover the way the race is run it's Coeur de Lion at 11/2 with a strong pace and Northwest Frontier at 9/1 if it isn't

When will I ever learn to not just look at the fancied horses. If I had looked at the Ascot race where Lightning Spear and Lord Glitters fished 2nd and third in the Queen Anne I would have seen that they were equally fast over a mile at Ascot. Then, given Lightening Spear's like for Goodwood, I would have realised that this was going to be a very tight finish and left the race alone <doh>

I was suckered into thinking this was a 2 horse race and the fact that Beat the Bank was blue across the board on Oddschecker last night
