Paremata School posted on Facebook it has closed "until further notice" due to flooding caused by the torrential rain that swept the capital on Thursday morning. A police spokesperson told Newshub it had been a busy morning with several callouts across "quite a few locations" across Wellington. Akatarawa Road, which spans between Waikanae and Upper Hutt has closed due to a slip, a spokesperson for the Kapiti District Council told Newshub. Another slip had covered the southbound lane of Johnsonville's Centennial Highway and had been referred to the council for cleanup. Police said much of the damage was surface flooding and small slips from earlier in the morning. It follows a muggy and wet morning as torrential rain hammered the city and its surrounding suburbs. A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told Newshub they have responded to five flooding callouts to houses in Paraparaumu but all incidents have since been resolved. The spokesperson said the flooding was mostly due to blocked drains and infrastructure problems. Wellington has had a rough beginning to the summer with wet and windy conditions battering the region over the last week. The wild weather brought down trees, scattered portaloos, delayed flights and caused hillsides to slip.
