Aguero has 10 goals in 26 games this season. Hernandez scored 13 goals in 27 his first season. Torres can hardly be described as a success story. Yes, of course players CAN have a successful first season, but if you are only willing to accept players that have a successful first season AND are a long term success, your chances of finding a striker are not very good.
He was the best striker in the world once upon a time, don't forget about that just to make your argument sound valid. Hernandez didn't get as much playing time as Giroud has done, and Aguero was awesome last season, and has been fighting injuries and poor management this season.
"He was the best striker in the world once upon a time" - but not in the PL. I am not forgeting about anything. You like to deal in absolutes and you are prepared to rubbish players after one season. That is stupid. For Example - Cristiano Ronaldo Season 1 - 2003/2004 - 4 goals, 4 assists - 29 appearances Season 2 - 2004/2005 - 9 goals, 6 assists - 50 appearances Season 3 - 2005/2006 - 12 goals, 7 assists - 52 appearances Clearly a ****ing awful player, never going to be any good! Let me tell you, if he had come to Arsenal, you lot would have moaned your head off about him.
Ronaldo was an 18 year old kid when he arrived at United. Giroud is a 26 year old, who is meant to be in or near his peak.
Not to mention the fact that Ronaldo was an out and out winger when he first came to United and Giroud is a CF.
For me Giroud has had a pretty good season, although he's had a few barren patches (like the current one). However, it's his first season in a higher standard of competition (as well as a higher level of demand from fussier supporters) and he's contributed directly to 27 goals in 44 games. It's not RVP level of goalscoring (even though it took him five season to achieve the tally Giroud has this year), but his stats warrant another season to see if he can do better. I wonder if Giroud would be better placed in a forward line of two instead of one - he has a good aerial and physical presence and would be well complimented by a more tricky forward who could profit from his layoffs and flick-ons. However I guess 4-4-2 is a bit out of date now.
sorry but i dont buy it at all. hes not a youngster still learning the trade of scoring goals . If he cant knock them in regularly by now , he never will . he is another example of the penny pinching " lets buy this second rate striker and hope he is good enough " attitude by the board . Well they took a gamble instead of buying REAL quality at a higher cost. It didnt pay off . again . Look at someone like Drogba , near the end of his career but would STILL be much more of a threat to a defence than Giroud is. Its about knowing where to be and getting there , dont seem to me like he has that instinct .
Torres needs to change his club a.s.a.p. The guy is ruining his career. Whatever the reason, it is not working with Chelsea. I am sure if he goes back to Atletico Madrid, he will be scoring goals for fun. I still can not believe he is finished. Sometimes I think even with Arsenal he can get back to his best. And that would be something. )
So you make the point that it's only Giroud's first season. Kyle offers you examples of lots of strikers who had great first seasons. Your response to is talk about how they did this season? Perhaps you forgot what your original argument was?
There are strikers who've had great seasons then went to crap. There are strikers who've had decent first seasons that have turned out good. Putting down a guy who's our second top scorer this season and bags a decent number of assists and saying he'll never come good is ludicrous. He's going to be here next season so instead of saying he's not our quality, and I will admit he's off form, let's wait to see how he performs next season as many new strikers tend to play much better in their second season
Agreed Also, the idea that he can't possibly improve in his second season because of his age doesn't hold water when you think of how Pires - signed as a 26 year old - turned out despite a hit-and0miss first season.
http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896...arsenal-appeal-giroud-red-card-against-fulham We are appealing against Giroud's red card, and after watching that incident several more times, I think we might be successful. The slip played a big part in that red card and made the tackle look a lot worse than it actually was.
I know we will be accused of bias & I understand why the ref showed a red, but I agree that it should be rescinded.
Agree too Replays clearly show that he slipped and then went over the top of the ball. The rules say that a player should be red carded if he makes a dangerous or reckless challenge, Giroud's was neither. Also compared to the lunge the BAE made for Spurs against City yesterday, which should have been a red, this looks really tame in comparison. Spurs were lucky not to go down to ten men yesterday and that probably played a big part it allowing them to come back against city.
No, I think the rule he was sent off for was for making a tackle that was reckless and used "excessive force". Quoting from the laws of the game - “Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded (sic) the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent. A player who uses excessive force must be sent off." It doesn't mean it shouldn't be recinded, I don't think he "far exceeded" the necessary use of force.
