I think Mansell gets some unfair stick- he was an absolute beast of a driver who went hammer and nails with some of the best EVER. Ive always felt he and Prost deserved 2 titles apiece and Senna 4, if Lady Luck would have smiled differently on those tense season finales. He was epic in Indy Car- had the VHS of that season when I was a kid, his laps at surfers paradise were awesome and he came back from a horrible crash too. Fantastic champion
He's still my favorite driver to date. He was just phenomenal to watch. With a bit of luck on his side and Prost not swooping in at Williams, he could have had 3 or more titles. His indy season was just incredible! Not sure there will be another driver hold both F1 and Indycar titles at the same time. Not to mention his dabble with the BTCC. Those were great times!
Ten years to the day since the tragic passing of Dan Wheldon. Hard to believe it's been 10 years since that absolutely awful day. Just wanted to take a moment to remember a champ, 2 times Indy 500 winner, and an often forgotten British racer.
With the halo design he would probably have survived that accident. I was trying to think of other sports (other than motor which includes bikes) that have life threatening accidents and the first one that comes to mind and you don't hear much of is Horse Trials. Several fatal and life changing accidents you rarely hear publicised. There have been a couple of deaths this year in the UK while eventing (more in traffic related incidents) and rather famously Christopher Reeve (Superman) was paralysed in 1995 whilst riding in a cross country event. He died just 9 years later, cardiac arrest. He had many health problems post the accident. There have been 2 known deaths in the UK, this year alone. In the US, more than 78,000 people visit hospital in 2007 with horse riding related accidents, 15% of which were head injuries. In the US 11 people die from drowning each day, nearly a quarter of a million each year worldwide. Perhaps motor racing is safer than we think.
IndyCar is back this weekend. Anybody in? I may fire up a fresh thread for 2022,...when I figure what to call it.
Blimey...it's good to have some racing back. One qualifying session in and already looking like it could be one hell of a season.
Good day for Macca in Indy at least with them taking pole for Texas motor speedway with Rosenqvist. Pato 10th, so still in a decent spot. So it's not all miserable for Macca today.
