I totally disagree, our SA1 and Marina development wipes the floor with Cardiff Bay, go to both in one day and you'll see the difference. Swansea Council dont get half the inward investment that Cardiff Council gets, so they aint doing a bad job at all IMO.
Swansea Council had little to do with SA1, it was all Welsh Assembly and private funded (pretty much totally as far as I'm aware). Coming from a town planner friend who did his masters degree on the SA1 development, he's told me that in planning circles SA1 is being held up as a perfect example of how to redevelop a "medium sized post industrial city". I still think Swansea needs help, but the Valleys need it more. I read somewhere that 40% of the working population of Merthyr is on incapacity benefit, but if there's no work... you can't expect an entire community to relocate simply because "The Man" closed all the mines, and subsequently, the factories. Worrying situation...
swansea lib dem council is a disgrace, every shop gets turned into bedsits, they have wasted millions and millions, the roads are a disgrace with pot holes everywhere, they try to take the credit for the sa1 development and hey have nothing to do with it....labour control was not much better and god forbid if we should ever have a tory council. over 500 applicants applied for just 12 apprenticeship jobs, there is drugs on every street corner, beggars everywhere its a nightmare......the only two good things is we are the gateway to gower and we have a premiership football team..
Got to say despite all the doom and gloom posted about our city it is still a great place to live. We have some fabulous parks, beaches, the Marina, Leisure Centre, Grand Theatre, Mumbles etc and of course the Swans at the Liberty stadium. OK there are some areas which are not brilliant and the city centre needs much upgrading which there are plans for but overall we are lucky compared with many. As for being a Taff or Taffy ....no thanks I'm not from the east, I'm a Swansea Jack.
taff is not from the east it covers all wales male or female, ask anyone who have served in the forces and anyone who live outside wales.
I've taken the following quote from Wikipedia, I know that dont mean much but its got to come from somewhere. "The term "Taffy", used as a nickname for people from Cardiff and by extension from anywhere in Wales, is sometimes thought to originate from the name of the river. It may be seen as slightly derogatory. Alternatively, however, the term may have originated from "Dafydd" (David) which is a popular Welsh first name.[citation needed]". I rest my case, Taff is a nickname for people from Cardiff, and is derogatory! It is as far as I'm concerned at least, perhaps its the ignorance which has helped people except the term. Never mind, it's been an interesting discussion, thanks for your input all. But the conclusion is Swansea Jacks and Cardiff Taffs!
"It may be seen as slightly derogatory" "I rest my case, it is derogatory" You should work for The Mirror!
It might be true in the forces but for anyone else it's just ignorance Dai. Like calling all Londoners Cockneys or all Scots Higlanders.
Its actually not true in the forces, some who dont understand the meaning of it may accept it. But those who do understand the nickname Taff, would never allow themselves to be called it! I served in the forces and was atttached to the Royal Hampshire Regiment for nine months, within a month my mates knew to never call me Taff. By then end of my tour with them, I was well known as being a Swansea Jack, whats more cause everyone hates Cardiff all the Pompey and Soton fans hated Cardiff Taffs! My job was complete!
Eh lads come on.. My house runs along side the embankment of the River Taff here in Llandaff, Cardiff and I catch at least 4 to 8 Rainbow trout a day, as well as a couple of Salmon.. I can catch a lot more with some extra hands if there is a large demand. If anyone wants any on a regular basis contact me and I will deliver the fish to you for the cheapest price you will find ( frozen or fresh ). GOD BLESS THE RIVER TAFF.
I fish for a hobby dude, 7 days a week. I love my fish and sell any fish that is surplus to requirements I sell, and I sell a lot. The Taff runs all the way from the valleys to Cardiff so I don't understand why people are associating the river Taff with Cardiff only. The Taffy saying for me has always represented anyone with a strong Welsh accent, hence the valleys, parts of north wales, and the outskirts of Swansea town.
you nearly got away with not being just another wum but your little dig with your last word scuppered that. I like fishing too but proper sea fishing not only a fresh water tickling plastic fisherman are you ? its nice that you love your fish do you name them and dress em up in little blue shirts ? i prefer to club mine and gut em before they meet the heat.
