I fail to see why Sisu is laughing, its an open champions league this season, anyone can win it, including ourselves.
Yeah, probably, in hindsight that looked a little silly. But Liverpool were certainly a better team when they won it in 2005 than they are now. English sides in Europe have declined, overall.
No way were they. They were fairly **** in 2005. Up front, that Czech bloke whose name escapes me or Sturridge and Suarez? ( Baros, that's the ****er!) Igor Biscan, Harry Kewell, Djimi Traore!!! I reckon overall they're better now. They just had literally nothing else to compete for in 2005 and went for it.
By that reasoning you lot should have a couple of CL trophies To win the CL you need a little luck too if you are not one of the best sides in it. Your two CL wins prove that. 2 injury time goals and Terry slipping. For us Milan thought it was over and the Milan keeper should have saved Smicer's shot.
Why's that? The years we've won the CL we've also won the league, ergo we are always completing on ALL fronts wherever possible. Even the most one eyed Liverpool fan can see that this was not the case in 2005. I'm not even putting down the achievement of winning it, just stating the bare fact that Benitez went all out to win the CL and nothing else.
Matth, you were rescued by that reliable old player of yours last night - O'Gee. What a cracker it was too. Very, very fortunate to get all three points, even though you were at home. CL this season?
2005 wasn't anything of the sort. It was a game turned on it's head by a scintillating display by a non-top, top player but capable of winning a game single-handedly
Do you mean the Olympiakos game or the final itself? The point being, you were very, very nearly out in the group stages and then built a lot of momentum. Which kind of proves Matth correct in that we could well yet get better and better and some how scrape our way to the final and win. You see? It's been done before by another mediocre side not too long ago. Not saying we will, in fact I very much doubt it, but it's possible.
It is an open C.L but that just means more teams can win it than normal, not every team. Yes whilst you are still in it you have a chance but you could as easily say Celtic could win it. Realistically you look nowhere near good enough. I think the English teams will struggle. I just can't see past the Germans, Spanish and maybe PSG. The english are at a similar level to the Italians really, outside bets but unlikely. You'll win your group though so I'd expect you to get to the last 8.
I know you were, and I was merely responding on topic in the form of an actual football discussion, which is so rare on this board before our good pals from the Chelsea board arrive and **** every single thread of any note up. I wasn't biting honest, just saying the truth as I see it through the eyes of a football fan.
Point missed But you said we had nothing else to play for, what about the seasons you won nothing? Those were surely the years you should have picked up at least another CL surely? And to prove it is even more untrue is that most teams that win it are competing for their league till the end or near to the end anyways so the assertion that we had nothing else to play for is bollocks. Some managers have prioritised the CL and still not won it. As I said, you need a little luck, and the twice you won it you had that, especially the last win. That doesn't mean it was not deserved you combative old fart
Then I'll respond in kind. I'd given up at half time in the final. Then Gerrard did what he did and the rest is history. You and Bayern was similar really. I was at the bar at my then local getting a large round in for predominantly united fans, but with a large grin on my face. I didn't have a grin on my face when I walked back into the telly room with said large round
No but we surely won it because we were out of the league race, it had nothing to do with winning games and beating Milan in the final with a little luck on our side? it was also a bad thing to win it on penalties until United beat Chelsea on penalties funnily enough
If you'd have bothered to attempt to compete in the league you would not have won that tournament, that much is obvious given the weaknesses in your squad. Learn the history of the club you claim to support. And, AGAIN, I am not and was not putting down the actually achievement in winning it.
First of all to say we didn't bother with the league is complete bollocks which leads me to suspect the rest is bollocks mate. we were well out of the running by the time the CL got serious and so were your lot so why didnt your lot win it then? you finished 18 points behind the chavs
