Steve McClaren arranged one-on-one meetings with all of his Newcastle players who remained at the club’s headquarters during the recent international break. Only one — Papiss Cisse — failed to show up.

On Monday night, McClaren was forced to turn to that same disillusioned player to lead his forward line at West Ham.

Cisse, the Senegal striker who wants a transfer, angered McClaren and his staff by not turning up for the meeting, although it was later rearranged with great difficulty.

Papiss Cisse's (centre) commitment has been questioned with the disillusioned striker missing a meeting

His time-keeping has also been called into question, as has his commitment. Before the Capital One Cup tie against Northampton, Cisse, having been dropped for the trip to Manchester United three days earlier, phoned on the day of the game to say he was ill. It did not go down well with the coaching team.

However, such is their desperation for a striker, McClaren chose to talk up Cisse over the weekend in an attempt to trigger a positive reaction. It did not work.

Indeed, following the team’s insipid performance and a 2-0 defeat which leaves them bottom of the Barclays Premier League, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer took aim at the No 9. ‘I looked at Cisse and thought Newcastle would have been better with 10 men,’ he said. ‘There was not enough hunger from Newcastle to win. At no point did I ever think they would win.’

Cisse is not the only player causing concern. His close friend Cheick Tiote is another who wanted to quit St James’ Park this summer. The Ivory Coast midfielder was missing from the squad at West Ham and there are questions about his commitment.

Cheick Tiote (centre), a close friend of Cisse, is also said to be unhappy with his lot in the north east

Meanwhile, Moussa Sissoko, who continues to talk up his Champions League credentials, missed the goalless draw at Old Trafford last month because of a slight groin strain picked up in the 3-0 defeat at Swansea the previous weekend.

Newcastle’s staff felt the France midfielder was fit to play but suspected he wanted to safeguard against injury ahead of the internationals.

These issues threaten to undermine the progress McClaren is trying to make. Senior players are quick to praise his coaching sessions and the mood around the squad is said to be much improved. On the pitch, however, the same problems remain.

Newcastle wanted to delay the kick-off at West Ham after the team bus was stuck in traffic but it would merely have delayed the inevitable. They now have only two points from five matches and are without a goal in nearly seven hours.

Newcastle signed Aleksandar Mitrovic despite concerns about his temperament. He is currently banned

Indeed, more than four hours had passed without a shot on target when defender Daryl Janmaat prodded tamely into the gloves of West Ham’s Darren Randolph during the first half.

They spent £12.5million on a striker, Aleksandar Mitrovic, but failed to heed the warning about his disciplinary problems. The 20-year-old is currently serving a three-match ban for a stamp on Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin and was fortunate not to be sent off within 2.7 seconds of his debut when he recklessly upended Southampton’s Matt Targett.

Newcastle needed to sign a proven goalscorer during the summer and failed to do so. This has frustrated McClaren.

He wanted Charlie Austin but, amid concerns over knee and shoulder injuries and with one year to run on his contract, the club refused to meet QPR’s £15m asking price. Tellingly, he has five goals this season and has started all of QPR’s six Championship matches.

Knowing they have needed a goalscorer for the best part of a year, how have Newcastle left themselves so short?

That question is dominating discussion in the manager’s boot-room right now. Just as it had in east London on Monday, the road ahead appears hazardous for McClaren.

So Cisse takes the piss and McClaren rewards him by bigging him up to the media and starting him against West Ham <laugh><doh> Dreadful man management. Mr Brolly looks like he's got door mat written all over him.

Actually that`s quite good article (which I suspect rules out the bought and paid for Mirror and the Chronic). Where`s it from?

They`ve known about Cisse for long enough. Can`t blame McClaren for trying I suppose but Mitrovic looks like a right nut job. There were questions about MVila but his problems were with the Russian mafia off the field. His behaviour (apart from a blip) has been impeccable on it. Mitrovic looks like a real problem child.

I`m not sure McClaren has what it takes to sort it.

Tiote, Cisse and Sissoko. Coincidence that it's the Muslims that they have, all want out?
