That wasn't because they weren't good enough, that was just because they were a lot more popular than he was and he wanted to be numero uno. A popularity clash that should never have happened, the team should always come first.

He used Rob Lee to get at Shearer.

Just like a player, I'd rather a Average player that tries then a World cup winner who doesnt care! He even got Luque to score! I seen an article in the chronicle before this years derby about when he was manager and playing S'land and they took the lead and Kevin Ball was jumping round Roeder and Roeder said "the game lasts 90 minutes" and well we won 4-1 that match! :D I'll always respect Glenn!

Morning Ben. To be fair that was a managerial masterstroke he was heavily praised for. If he hadn't done that we wouldn't have the mature Ben Arfa we have today. He had to taught about team ethic. Ben Arfa was still immature and playing for himself.

Also although I'm not a fan, Obertan did quite well for the team in that period.

I think its these kind of things that have been quickly forgotten in the rush to jump on the Pardew out bandwagon.

Tactically he was very astute last season.

    - The way he used Cabaye/Tiote to dictate games,
    - the coaching of Benni,
    - his use of Jonas which benefited the team hugely,
    - the superb understanding he developed in our defensive unit,
    - the switch to 433 with Cisse to kick on in the 2nd half playing better football,
    - the mirroring of Blackburns direct tactics against Man U at home after they struggled the week before,
    - the complete tactical masterclass twice against Stoke including playing at their own game with the towels etc,
    - the ability to get the players back up after a defeat,
    - bringing on Shola at home to Spurs when 2-1 down,
    - the tactics against Swansea where we just let them play in areas we wanted too,
    - 6 clean sheets in 8 games between mid March and early May which saw such a strong finish.

I think that's what his naysayers need to try and remember. He has struggled a bit more this season but he'll learn from it. Europe is not something he has vast experience either, he'll the impact it has. If we are going to give up on managers so quickly we'll go backwards hard. we are not going to get a Mourinho, Wenger, SAF type finished product. We can't afford it for a start. If we all stick together we'll be a stronger club. That means manager, board, fans, coaches, the whole set up.

Just to clarify, I wouldn't get rid of him, the way our club is being ran we are a mid table side at best, which overperformed last season. Last season was a one off for the Mike Ashley era and people are getting carried away. Don't you think though last season when Benny was on the bench we could have got him on more and gained a few extra points?

No I don't, I think we may have garnered less points. Since Pardew taught him a few team values, he has been our best and most consistent player. The team always has to come first, even with a ridiculous talent like Benni. It was brave because he had thrown strops at previous clubs when they tried to improve this character flaw. It was risky but necessary.

Not only that but you have to consider how much Pardew wanted to protect our most gifted player physically and mentally after dickhead De Jong tried to wreck his career. Also it created a real hunger in Benni which we benefited from hugely. As a manager you have to take a longer view than the fans and think about much more than just one player.

I think we got as much as could be expected last season, probably more. It has hurt us a little this season trying to live up to increased expectation level.

Sorry too, wasn't suggesting you wanted him out, I just don't agree with notion Benni could have been handled better. I think we have to careful of rewriting the good stuff he has done.

I'm going to make a crazy suggestion too. I think we should drop Ba or Cisse when Obertan is fit and play him left until the window. I can't believe I'm saying it because he looks cack. But everytime he has played left he has looked ok and I really think some balance could help us. I also think putting Cisse in direct competition with Ba ends Ba's worries over playing left and could drag the stuff out of Cisse he has been missing.

Right ring the men in white coats <laugh>

but the way its going atm (I really dont think it will last for either of us) whoever finishes above the other will definately stay up as I do think the bottom 2 are gone, or at least they are getting left behind a bit now so the chances are, they will go down.
