Match Day Thread WC Group E

FIFA’s rule on national eligibility is just a free-for-all.

Not born in that country but from that ethnic group? You can play.

Not born in that country or from that ethnic group but you were born in that country’s former colony? You can play.

Not born in that country or from that ethnic group but lived in that country for several years since a certain age? You can play.

It can mean anything and therefore means nothing. Alfie Jones playing for Canada is just absurd since he didn’t even know he was eligible until he told Millar that his grandmother was from Canada in passing conversation. Now he’s as Canadian as maple syrup.
Jack Charlton was one of the first (if not the 1st) to start going through players ancestry to see if they were eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland. He got the likes of Tony Cascarino (total Cock-er-ney) and Ray Houghton (Scottish) to play for ROI as they had Irish grandparents. That's about 40 years ago and It's snowballed from there.

four teams need to be lower than scotland for them to progress. still eight groups unfinished. that said, big surprises in groups a and e.
Group F: Sweden to lose to Japan by four or more goals.

Group D: Paraguay and Australia are on three points and play each other, a draw would send both through.

Scotland need Paraguay to lose by two or more goals, or Australia to be beaten by at least four goals.

Group F: Senegal and Iraq to draw.

Or Iraq to beat Senegal by no more than two goals.

Group H: Uruguay to lose to Spain.

Group G: Iran to lose to Egypt.

SATURDAY

Group L:
Croatia to lose to Ghana by at least three goals.

Group K: DR Congo v Uzbekistan to be a draw.

Or Uzbekistan to win by no more than three goals.

Group J: This is a carbon copy of Group D, with Austria and Algeria on three points and a draw would send both through.

Scotland need Algeria to lose by two or more goals, or Austria to be beaten by at least four goals.

need at least 4 of these to happen
its very unlikely

Whilst it wouldn't have mattered anyway as they smashed Curacao, the German performance there does show the folly in using H2H rather than GD to split the teams, Germany knew they were top regardless and played like it - if it were ranked based on GD ok they'd have still come top but there would have been a fair bit more nervousness there and maybe some more desire from them in that second half

John Aldridge qualified for Ireland via his great grandmother!
