I do actually rate him for what he won with Man U but aside from the number of caps won, he certainly underachieved for England when it really mattered aside from the scuffed penalty against Argentina. That's what happens when being a celebrity is more important than the sport, and I also reckon that's why SAF got shot of him when he did.
He took us to the world cup in Japan single handedly against Greece at old Trafford.. only player on the park that day!.. I was there and there were many (big) players who bottled the job at that game.
funny ole game in it, all opinions are valid cus it's what we believe in! Rooney, yes good player and has scored more goals for England than any other Englishman.......is he world class? Not in my book. To me, bottles out in tournaments and looks very ordinary when playing against world class teams... As for Becks.....don't know why, but in the years he played for England, he was Mr England for me! Maybe not the most skillful player but his crosses and passing could not be ignored. Most of his free kicks .......Genius!
Not quite with me. I didn't always like him. I was one of the army of 'haters' who blamed him for kicking out at Simione and getting himself sent off. I also don't like Manchester United much. What REALLY impressed me was how he didn't answer back, take swipes at critics, or make excuses (unlike Rooney in South Africa) but knuckled down and won fans back by his efforts on the pitch. Very dignified. He then did it again after being dropped by Wally-with-the-brolly. He quietly trained and won his place back, showing no bitterness. Hearing the fans sing 'only one David Beckham' at Wembley whilst we were losing to some side (I can't remember who) forced the numpty to recall him. We haven't won anything WITHOUT him playing, so I guess England was no worse or better than it is now.
