Simply, why are a lot of people not bothered, and certainly amongst my friends and work colleagues this is a pretty common reaction.
It's got to be down to our view of him as a person I think. Charlton, Lineker and Owen were all role model types, whereas Rooney is very much at the other end of the spectrum I'd suggest.
