Can't help thinking this has the hallmarks of when WJ was let go.

I know WJ was injured and at the time City were strapped for cash, but the service that fella gave he deserved more than he got.

Same for Ash, surely we could have treated him better than letting him know he would not get a contract at the end of the season ?

Surely the only way you can do that is to offer him a rolling contract until either he or the club ceases to exist.
 
No comparison at all. Wayne Jacobs was released on Christmas Eve (quiet news day) because he was injured. Chairman Martin Fish said he thought Jacobs would never play professional football again. He played in the Premier League with Bradford City.
Ian Ashbee, great captain that he was, received a colossal contract when City were promoted to the Prem. At the time he was injured and no-one could say 100% if Ash would ever play football again. The contract made Ash a millionaire. Hardly in the same catergory of releasing a young Wayne Jacobs because the lad was carrying an injury he got whilst playing for City.
When all this boils down, Ash will see, I hope, that Hull City gave him the very best of treatment, medically and financially. He was still a first team regular at the age of 34, team/club captain, and most players would have been looking to retire graciously at the end of the season. Maybe move into coaching. Not Ash, he apparentley wanted another deal.
No-one can play for ever.Or expect to be bankrolled into old age.

Karlberg you've summed it all up perfectly. Browny gave him a contract that in all honesty he didn't need to do, Ash recognises this by going to help the tanned tosser out in his hour of need.

Had Browny and Duffman not thrown money about so liberally Mr Allam wouldn't have had to dig so deep to rescue the club from the abmyss.

Not only did Jacobs play football again. He played against City for Rotherham about three months later.
Those were the days.
