I had a nasty feeling about this game for several days. Saints had not looked a bad side whenever I had seen them of late. Several of our players were far from their best tonight, and it was very clear that Gray is not a direct replacement for Deeney. Gray likes to run onto through balls, while Deeney can play with his back to the goal and hold onto it.
Felt like a win really after another calamity near (well, at) the beginning. Need to be better than that for Wolves on Saturday.
Got away with just being 1/0 down at half time - hopefully our back line are getting their mistakes out the way ! Just didn't click up front due to lack of movement or ability to control the ball. Southampton defended well too in all fairness . Still good finish by Gray .
Bad day at the office all round. Not sure that any of our players emerged with any credit. Sneaked the draw. Need to have our heads screwed on on Saturday.
Sounds grim, cup final places up for grabs and push for 7th should means the players are on top of things.
Right at the beginning of the game, Doucouré and Capoue gave the ball away when under little pressure. I think that those two have had a huge influence on the team, and if they are having a poor game the whole team suffers.
My internet kept crashing, not sure why, possibly something nasty going on behind the erratic stream so gave up at 80 mins an missed the late goal. Probably a fair result overall but we didn't do well and Soton were very positive. Certainly missed TD and I thought the team looked tired after short break from Huddersfield. Must to better against Wolves, 7th place at stake.
Just watched the highlights and the opening goal. Why do we telegraph that we are going to kick off by passing the ball back towards goal, why not do something different or pass it back out the the wings. Nice symmetry to the game goal wise though.
On the original viewing of their goal on TV, I thought that the first point of contact on Long had been his elbow because he had it up. I couldn't blame the ref for giving it as he wouldn't have been close enough and I don't know where the assistant was. On later viewing, I saw that Cathcart had managed to miss the elbow and it hit Long on his side.
