I think the gig is that this is how marsch sets all his teams up. Playing narrow means more players are available to press. The obvious way to beat it is for the opposition to switch play to the opposite flank if they’re able to. As emu says that does mean you get wide players running at defenders coming to meet them… and they’re likely able to bang crosses in whilst our cover gets across to them. However, the theory is those players are running into heavy traffic. So we clog up the middle and close down the flanks rather than covering the flanks at the expense of the middle. So far it’s led to messy often basketball games but… the opposition have found it much harder to get clear cut chances… and because we’re hunting in packs, we’re forcing errors and getting opportunities in transition. So it may not be pretty but it’s proved effective in 4 of our 5 games under him. As you say… how well will this work against top opposition? … guess we’ll find out soon enough!
