There were two handballs. One when the defender slipped and it hit his arm, and the other where he deliberately claws the ball away from Austin. The first was just outside, and the second was probably just inside. It depends on which handball he gave. Either way it's a definite red.
I was convinced it was a penalty...was clear to me in Paris, via the radio, however, having seen that video it looks like he falls on the ball and stops it just outside the box, and that is the first foul...from then on, seems like the ref doesn't have a clue what is going on.
Thats it. Not sure if all this 'last man' stuff stuff still means a red or not, but definitely not a penalty.
I'll look it up, as Fingi clearly has a bee in his bonnet on this, and we seem to be having the same conversation on two threads! ........Stroller has it, its 'denial of a goalscoring opportunity'. I don't think Austin ever had the ball in his control, so ref's interpretation understandable.
There was also the fact that is wasn't a penalty because it wasn't as it didn't happen. I stand down and the Ref was bang on IMO very good decision. Real time I would have put £500 quid on it being inside. Respect to the Ref IMO Plus he was tackled by the last defender. The first foul was outside and i am not even sure it was deliberate as he fell, the second part was in the box and then Austin's shot was blocked. Put it this way Austin scores he gives a goal no doubt ... It was a excellent decision IMO
Quite a few saying early in this thread that it was nailed on pen but the replay shows initial handball was outside the box. Regarding sending off, doesn't matter where on the pitch it was...last man is last man and if the ref blows for a free kick then he's probably obliged to get the red card out also. Just my opinion though....not a fact of law.
You don't see from that angle, but their man trapped the ball with his hand in the box, after the initial handling outside of the box. A camera in SA road would've picked this up. Regardless, it's a red card- and either a free kick on the very edge of the box (not 3 yards away), or a penalty. It's unequivocal that Austin would've been in on goal were it not for the intervention of the Bournemouth player.
He initially handles with his left hand outside of the box, then his body flips over, and he holds the ball back with his right arm inside the box, when he realises it would've rolled through to put Austin in on goal. You have to rewind the footage there a couple of times to see it, a camera angle from the opposite side would've shown things more clearly.
If its a foul, its a pen, it happened 2 feet inside the box.looks like he hit it with his hands twice.
Of course any sane ref would give the penalty seeing as it was an obviously advantage carrying on as it was a penalty. Edit, that was weird, I made an edit and it did a reply to myself.
The first contact outside the box could be deemed accidental. Once his momentum carries him into the box he tries to scoop the ball away with his hand. Red card and a penalty should've been the correct decision.
That is what I thought. Did this happen when it was 0 - 0, or when we were 1 - 0 up? It's right to make the officials know what we think, otherwise they are likely not to give us anything, but for me we carried on argueing with them too long.
That's as i saw it. The scoop of his hand INSIDE the box, took the ball away from Austin when he was on goal and ready to shoot. I'll stand by my view (and the view of the players obviously) that it was a stonewall penalty.
The biggest problem I have is not whether it was a penalty or not as the initial handball seems to be outside the box. My problem is, the linesman waved his flag. What did he wave for? The ref awarded a free kick outside the box. If it is deemed a foul (handball) by the last defender to deny a clear goal scoring opportunity, surely that is a straight red card. I don't understand how the ref can award a free kick and not send the defender off. It is baffling. Austin was about to shoot.
Never a pen using the correct footage .. never but at real time we all hounded the ref ... only trouble was he was exactly right. A tumble at full speed accidental handball then into teh box and handball ... you don't need a cam there i saw that clearly but on reflection it was if he grabs it thinking he was getting a free kick from the contact. Austin may have had a shot without the handball but the one he did have was superbly defended by another player who didn't stop to think anything. Anyway it wasn't a pen and the ref in any court in this land would get honoured for a correct decision IMO. He got it 100% right and I was 100% wrong
