However my understanding was that a British citizen could not fight in a foreign Army. Guess there are people who hold dual citizenship where they are obliged to join a foreign army.

Plenty of others went and fought in Syria and for the Kurds and now in Israel and are fine to do so. A lot of Israeli politicians, army, the media, and just generally, have yank accents. Yeah, it's the status of the group you're going to fight for. Simple fact is, people view the Peshmerga and ISIS a bit different.
I'd recommend caution though if anyone ever hears someone wants to go and volunteer for some group. You have no idea how public opinion might shift in a few years and if the group you've signed up for end up on the terrorist org list. Then you're ****ed
Fair point, there are also instances where veterans have gone out to fight with them, come back and been prosecuted. The whole thing imo is wrong. As Welshie says it all depends on who you're fighting for and where western country's allegiances lie. We class PKK as terrorists, but not the YPG, but to Turkey they both are. And there are so many separate groups out there who all overlap it's hard to keep up. So imo you shouldn't be out there either way. Part of the problem is that our laws are so wooly about the whole thing unless it suits our cause. As long as you're not committing war crimes it's largely all good, but that gets sidelined as long as you're not fighting for someone we oppose or are fighting for someone we support, like we're seeing in Israel/Gaza. None of them will be questioned about war crimes. An argument could be made for going out to Ukraine. Although I've seen footage of Russian POWs being shot in the leg and stomach and bleeding out. But even if no crimes are being committed I think it's right to have a blanket ban. You should join your country's armed forces only and if the government sends forces into a conflict you do so that way only.
