Tactically it sounds like Putin is trying to split the Ukraine in two, West v East, an example of this, it's like Munse and his neighbour arguing over how much land each of them will take and binning letters from the local powers that be to retreat to their original borders or face sanctions fines.

That's true. I just think you have to remember that around 80% of those Russian forces are conscripts and reservists. Folk who've never seen battle and probably wouldn't chose to unless they were coerced into the military. Wouldn't surprise me at all if most of those lads had no idea that they were actually going to be sent into a full scale invasion.
