I think the EU will fall apart tbh if Hungary vetoes these new sanctions.

The thing just doesnt work for these types of events.

You are quite correct in that, my friend ... my point was broader ... I.e. that in a world where people can now choose to identify as many different things, Putin would deny Ukranians even the right to be Ukranians ...

Yeah interesting, I looked it up, more than 90% of citizens consider themselves Ukranian. Although that increases with age to 92%, but that latter part is nothing new, as I tend to think you get acustomed to what you are born into. Much like young Brits, preferring the EU.

The biggest irony is that Ukraine was one of the distinct and key Soviet Socialist Republics that formed the old USSR ... so it was OK for it to be a republic back then ... but now according to Putin it was more like part of 'greater Russia' Al along ...<doh>

I suppose the Irish Republic would argue it should be a United Ireland, and after our exit from the EU I'm sure future generations will swing that balance, and it will eventually become a United Ireland if it hasn't in thought process already. If Krankie gets her way, it will be Scotland gone too, the moral of my story is we don't always get what we want to be, and we have decades of history on that. In the middle of all that is me, who never gets a say on my thoughts, whether I want to be part of this bigger Union (UK), no true English parliament as such, yet have had to suffer the consequences of it as an Island with past history of bombings, some of which went off in Kent & London. I just feel when we start jumping on this moral high ground as a country, I just think, well hang on a minute. But looking at the bigger picture, rather than the domestic one, the European alliance has advanced on Russia and still wants to advance more, Putin is merely pushing back on that. One communist federation, pushing back on a potential future authoritarian European federal state, I struggle to see the differences, aside from human rights abuses.

Only found out last week, as of 2022 the UK is the worlds 3rd largest defence spender. It's now $71B a year.

    That's a ****ing lot.

I think people like to make the domestic problems in the UK overblown quite a bit tbh.

In Spain the Catalan government genuinely attempted an illegal breakaway.

In Scotland, people get annoyed that flower of Scotland isn't played when a Scotsman wins a medal in curling.

there's quite a bit of a gulf in the actions the jocks take, compared to the amount of **** they talk. As is a common thing amongst us British.

    We outspend ****ing India.

But then again, their most recent skirmish with China involved planks of wood, so that can't be a surprise.

Russia's defence spending is only $61B per annum. I say only, that's a tremendous amount, but before the Johnson government announced a $20B increase in defence spending about a year and a half ago, the UK spent $57B per annum on defence spending. The UK GDP is significantly larger than Russia's, we can spend 70 billion and its still only above the NATO limit of 2.0% of GDP.

Not to mention, if you look at Russian small arms and personal equipment, a vast majority is Soviet Union stock, which is no surprise as mass production in the 80s and 90s was out of control. Even a lot of their helicopters and navy are Soviet era.

So Russia’s army is held together with rubber bands and string? Mostly conscripts too. Interesting.

I thought the Russian army had pretty tough training.

Not a single budget from any country on this entire planet is not inflated brother <laugh>
