Do people even use that much oil these days, I thought the days of filling up the chip pan with it were gone. I use olive oil, but purposely use it sparingly, simply because I use it as an aid to cook, rather than want my food swimming in it.

Olive oil doesn't work for everything though. Nothing with a high heat.

Not this old chestnut, I've had this debate years back, it works for everything I need it for but as long as people don't buy it for the supposed reasons you give, that's fine by me.

https://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/cooking-tips-techniques/olive-oil-smoke-point-myth#:~:text=Extra virgin olive oil is the most stable oil to,antioxidant content in the oil.

    Why We Got It Wrong

Why was there misinformation in the first place? Mountanos speculates that one reason may be because of a historical lack of high quality of olive oil readily accessible in the United States. It's likely that recommendations have been based on olive oil that is refined, mixed with other oils, or not 100 percent extra virgin, and thus would not stand up to heat as well. Wang adds that "some [older] studies were done using heating conditions that would exceed those used in normal food preparation—e.g., frying at 180℃ for 1.5 hours to 25 hours" and were therefore misleading.

Lastly, one of the most significant contributing factors to the olive oil myth is the focus on smoke point alone, which we now know is not necessarily the best indicator of an oil's ability to withstand heat.

Olive oil is perfectly fine for frying but I tried extra virgin and that tends to burn and left a funny taste

Fair enough mate. I've never had a problem with it. I've used it for frying and roasting, maybe it's down to the quality you bought, as specified in the above article. Normally I pay between £7 - £13 dependent on brand and size of bottle, cheaper when on offer, the one I'm currently using is organic extra virgin.

Interesting. I've always avoided it for things like searing because I have always read not to. I do use it for most things that cook medium temps... Or used to. My wife complains that when I make pancakes they taste olivey so I stopped for gentle Flavoured things
