The Hawaiian resedents voted in 1959 to become a state or not ..94.3 % voted yes , 5.7 % voted no ..

There desendents did , and on the islands ... cop out...... not when it became a state welshscoucer... I dont like what any nations did out of there real jurisdiction . United States , France England .. the works , but the Falklands is different to me because of the closeness to the mainland . We have an island in the St Lawrence river in the middle of canada that france owns ..

On that subject you do realise that without the influence of these terrible colonial powers your Country would now be run by simple, indiginous tribes and you'd be living in a tent. Scratch that you wouldn't even be in Canada. Somehow I suspect you're not related to Chingachkook.

On your proximity argument well I'm sorry but you simply cannot pretend that imperial conquest didn't happen. If it didn't then Canada wouldn't be the country it is and neither would Australia which at the time was occupied by a backward indiginous culture. So it happened whether we like it or not, and the inevitable result is far-flung territorites. So we are where we are.

Most Imperial powers have since willingly allowed the people of those territories to choose their own destiny, with some exceptions (America being one). In many cases that has led to disaster with dictatorships, corruption, mass murder and a breakdown in the rule of law. Countries stuck in a time warp. Look at some of the basket cases in Africa. Look at the brutal regimes in South America, including Argentina, following independence. So colonialism has brought good things and bad. The family history of the citizens is irrelevant, and self determination is protected by the U.N so the Islanders are going nowhere.

But whichever way you dress it up Argentinian claims are purely based on proximity, nothing more, for the reasons already stated. This argument has consistently failed internationally. Spain and Italy have protectorates within spitting distance of the African coast.

Lastly, if they're "worthless" as suggested by one person here why do the Argentinians want the Islands? Probably to deflect attention away from domestic problems (remember Galtieri?) and possibly the oil and gas reserves that exist there. Colonialism brought right up to date. <ok>

Not anymore , theonly reason I got involved is because I thought it was wrong at the time it was happening and feel the same way now .. just file it under another" big bully " nation ****ting on a ""small have not nation " ... sorry for the rant , cheers

Been a bloody good and interesting debate roof <cheers>

"another big bully nation ****ting on a small have not nation "

Not into over-simplifying things are you? <laugh> I think Argentina was the bully by invading tiny islands in 1982 and gambling we'd do **** all about it.

What with a 10,000 mile gap...<laugh>

looks like someone jumped in with 2 feet first and failed to read the rest of the convo, else you would realise he was referring to the Falklands and Argentina, being part of the same main land. Nothing to do with Britain and the 10,000 mile gap ;)

the falklands is not the uk or Argentinians island, Its an independent country and should remain that way....I dont want my taxes going towards another country when we have food banks as our most growing industry...

The 10,000 mile gap is between dai's ears .... not so far for project but he's getting there ...PS .. Hows the little one doin project , good sleeper or a nightmare
