He (or she, now) has to be able to see down the line, and the kicker, and judge when the precise moment of contact is. He's also at pitch level so doesn't have the benefit of the 3D elevated view of the camera, and there are all sorts of bodies with all sorts of movement going on and getting in the way. Mostly, they do a decent job - it's just those blatant cock-ups like the Milner and Azpilicueta examples that leave you scratching your head.
