It's simple, really: it's the FA bleedin' Cup! Anything goes, especially on their own turf. As I write West Brom are losing at home to Bristol City and Villa were held by Wycombe.

We were cobbled together last night and for the most part it didn't show, it just caught up with us in the second half and the first goal was down to Enrique, the second to Bogdan. Two stupid clangers that cost us.

Dont comment much anymore, but often here for a lurk and of course i greatly value all of your opinions on how we are doing.
Watched the game last night and as its the kids I thought I would give my opinion on individuals, the team and club philosophy.

Bogdan - ****e, Him and Migs should be shipped out as soon as possible.
Enrique - Guy hasnt has any game time and at times his composure was useful, but at the same time he appears to be completely shot and should be shipped out as soon as possible.
Illori - has had no game time for a long time and it really showed when he started to tire, but as his fitness improves he should show himslef at least to be a competent and determined option.
Stewart - Looked very dependable at this level, dont know how that will transfer to higher level.
Randall - Looks like my mate who i watched the game with, provided a great deal of entertainment.
Smith - Probably the best crosser we have in the squad, looked quality tonight and someone who could offer something in the first team.
Brannagan - Big fan of this lad, and he didnt disappoint, good without being outstanding.
Teix - looked a level above, and has some amazing skill and technique. Tired badly though through lack of game time due to limbo between u21s and first team.
Kent - Exciting player with a lot to learn, think he will be hard puched to make it with Ibe, Wilson, ojo and Canos all in a similar position and coming through.
Sinclair - Seems determined to leave so i couldnt give a ****, enjoy rotting at city.
Benteke - Confused me, I was wondering wht the connection was between Benteke and Exeter and why they had a statue of him at their stadium, then realised it wasnt a statue.

Chirivella - Mades some massive bloopers when he first came on, but did get more composed, think there is more to come.
Ojo - Shame he didnt get more time, made the difference and got us back into it
Maguire - Didnt really see him do much, no complaints.

The team - Was pleased to see them get through it. exeter are a professional outfit and this could have been a whole lot worse. We came from behind twice, survived even though are team noticably tired. Blooded a load of youngsters and they should all be proud, (except Enrique and Bogdan) Who should be shot.

Philosophy - Three years ago our u21s would have destroyed this Exeter side as they were slick and all played together regularly. Sterling, Ibe, Pacheco, Suso, Wisdom etc. These days we seem to loan a lot more of our players loaned out and they dont seem so used to playing together. Im completely torn, I think, Some players, like Teix, Ibe, Ojo, Canos have really benefited from their loans. And I also think the likes of Pacheco and Suso got stale playing below their level in the u21s league. However, the players who have been loan are not going to be as cohesive as those that regularly play together. Question is, (and it probably deserves its own thread.) Do you go the Chelsea way of loaning players out, Most ly to make profit later on? Or the La Masia route where you keep players together and they move to the first team together as a well rounded unit? The thing is of course that in Spain, reserve football plays in the league, which gives the u21s a better chance of developing well together, (best of both worlds.) Where as in the UK its basically Schoolboy football for u21s and then straight into the Prem.

All in all I was happy, especially because I will now get to see Teix, Smith and Brannaghan play again in two weeks.

Can't disagree with that too much <ok>

Last point is tricky.. as you say some players really benefit from loans out into the lower leagues not just our players but at other club as well, but others seem to get lost in the loan market and then never make it anywhere. Conversely, some get stuck in under 21's and by time you know it, they're 23 and played barel any first team football and get moved on for nothing.

It depends what you want from your youth teams. Do you want to run academies as a profit in which case loaning them out is the sensible thing to do, expose them to other leagues and hope to sell them on, then use that money to invest in the first team. However, I don't think Liverpool fans want that. We want to see young players from the academy coming through, especially local lads and make their name into the first team... crying out for a new Fowler.. Carragher.. Gerrard.

Keeping them all in U21's and playing them all together is a nice idea, get's them used to each other and hopefully, used to a system/style which mirrors the first team so they can slot in seamlessly (like Barca and Arsenal) however if only 2 of them are only actually good enough to make it through to the first team, then they aren't benefiting much from playing with others and getting used to playing with them because they won't make it anyway.

The Under 21 league isn't good or competitive enough. Most of the U21's are made up of younger players because so many players are out on loan. Kind of a catch 22, all clubs think it's not competitive enough so send their best ones out, making it less competitive. You could argue that if they scraped the loans and kept most of the under 21's in their youth teams then the under 21 league would be a higher standard etc, especially if you through in a few older first team players.

Also doesn't help that sometimes kids that are 17/18 think they've made it when they sign a contract for 5k a week... no 18 year old needs that much money FFS... they're probably still living with their mums! Think there should be some kind of wage cap for under 18 year olds so they don't get all this money and don't work hard for it. People like Sinclair who has ben kicking up a fuss and even Smith in the summer not agreeing terms because of money.. at that age it shouldn't be about money, should be about what can you offer me in terms of progression in the next 2 years. They have it pretty cushty by all accounts, nice pitches, lovely facilities... go back to older players and you hear so many stories about having to do the hard work, cleaning boots for the first team etc.. all these things which add character and should drive people to want to actually make it.

I agree, think keeping them together is the way forward. But something has to be done about the u21s league to make it more competitive. Im not a fan of loans for the most part. Especially when teams bring in players just to bulk their squad out with no intention of playing them. (ilori.) Think you are right about the money (and hype) too.
We have had some amazing talents join us that have not panned out. Pacheco was hyped beyond belief and has career has sufferred as a result. he is only now beginning to find his way and look like a player. Suso left us for money and went and sat on a bench at Milan, its only after his recent loan move to Genoa that he has started to play, (and i expect to do well.) I think getting the balance between Melwood and the academy is important and tricky.

Some players of course come through the academy and dont fit in with the clubs style and they should be loaned out if talented and profit possible.

    Great points there by all.

I really liked the benteke statue joke. Very good.

The points on u21 are well made too.

Barca have a huge academy which is why half of England are trying to bribe 15 year olds to leave there to go to England.

They have teams in pro leagues and what we actually have done under Rodgers is taken an u21 team that did ok in its level and totally hollowed itv out on loan and played u19s in it so it's near the bottom of its league

We don't have an u21 team anymore. We've a mix up of whoever happens to turn up

The thing is the older guys like Smith Randall and teix showed at worst if we did have a league 2 reserve side we'd cope well enough.
